SOLVED. Middle grade about quirky family with inventor neighbor [s]

I'm looking for a middle grade (I think) book that I read somewhere around 2012-2014. It was about a quirky family whose next door neighbor was an inventor of some type. I can't remember much about the family, but I specifically remember that neighbor invented edible pencils that you could suck on in school, and that he was almost blind and fell in love with a barbershop pole because he thought it was a woman waiting for the bus. There is a scene where he finally gets glasses and realizes his mistake.
I think the book's cover pictured the family sitting on the roof of their house, but I'm not positive.
