There are multiple story lines in the book. The guy who wants to climb the social status in Paris despite not being French, is shown to be throwing lots of parties and charming.
There is a married couple. The woman loved and still loves a man since her childhood. However, the man travels off to Europe (some kind of voyage for knowledge in France (?) ) and the woman marries the man's friend, who genuinely loves her. The man's friend establishes a successful business in America (?).
Somehow there is a narrator beside all these people.
When the Great Depression hits, the ambitious partier talks to the narrator about how he has managed to save most of his money by listening to the advise of a vatican church person and buying to save up gold.
The married couple is impacted, but shows sign of improvement and reestablishment after a while.
The story focuses a lot on the man that the married woman loves, but details escape me.
