Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Happy packing, Alessandra. It's fun to have a mom that shares your interests. :)

Kassandra, have a very *productive* weekend and fun!!!
Title of the weekend - "Two for One"

Hey Renee, glad your back and catching up, here's the scoop:
-Alessandra has her parents waiting on her this weekend;
-Kassandra's entertaining her favorite activities this weekend;
-and I am baking so I can enjoy Tea and cake whilst I read, uninterrupted by hubby, since I have my four kids. :D

Next question is what are you and Sandy doing for the weekend?

message 53: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Melissa, love the Two for One title!

Faye, Walking Dead is one of my favourite shows and is completely addictive. I don't think I would be strong enough to resist. Is there any way that you could avoid picking up the DVD from the library until Monday?

I'm afraid the deed is already done! Maybe I can use it as a reward - one episode for every 100 pages read? I'll read like lightning!

message 55: by Alessandra (new)

Alessandra (chibisuke) | 266 comments My parents abandoned me and left me with the neighbours cat *laughs* I should have seen this coming, but oh well. That will be my break time then :D

Sounds nice to have a reward for every 100 pages :)

Plot Twist...

message 57: by Karen (new)

Karen | 289 comments Well no hotels (or associated perks), parents or baking lined up for me this weekend. I do have to be out and about quite a bit though. I still plan to use my time at home to read and I hope to finish my current read Tunnel Vision and at least one other book, but hopefully two. I am thinking of The Ocean at the End of the Lane as my first choice, followed by anything that looks like fun.

message 58: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Sounds like a great plan Karen. Enjoy!

I told my students I was going to sleep late, read lots of books, and eat ice cream! (There was none to be had in the cafeteria, and about 100 degrees in the classrooms. We were all hoping for ice cream today!) Hilariously, they all nodded like those were the best, sanest plans ever made. So sweet!

message 61: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 221 comments I had huge plans of finishing my current reads and picking up new ones for the readathon. Alas work intervened and am stuck with my current reads.

So hope to finish The Goldfinch and Every Dead Thing over this weekend. And if I do manage to do that and have time left, will read The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Happy reading everyone :) Here's to a great weekend :)

A great reward after a tough week, ugh, heat! That's a great plan Renee, ice cream and books! Yeah!

Your students only heard the last two words, ICE CREAM. :)

Happy Reading Everyone!!!

I read The Ocean... In about 2 hours, it's a good plan!

message 64: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Yes, I'm reading shorties to boost my numbers and to make it fun this weekend. So here are my first two done:

The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl (1001 Childrens)
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Now to start The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick

I seem to be stuck reading huge amounts of Get Started in Latin this weekend, since it's due back to the library on Tuesday and I can't renew it because someone else is waiting for it. Whenever I need breaks from that due to BRAIN EXPLOSION, I'm reading Cousin Bette.

message 66: by Kassandra (last edited Sep 06, 2014 08:37AM) (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Melissa - love the new term of 'shorties'! That's a great way to stay motivated through the readathon. Good for you!

I'm going back and forth between books this weekend to keep pace. Once something begins to drag, I go back to a different book to keep my interest up. I haven't tried this strategy before so let's see if it works or blows up in my face!

message 67: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley Ash (kimberley_ash) | 35 comments I've just finished The Deadly Dare Mysteries (325 pages since I started beforehand!) and moving onto A.N.T.I.D.O.T.E.. Short-ish books that have been sat on my shelf for ages seem to be the way to go!

message 68: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Kassandra, I usually do that strategy with longer books until one of them takes hold and then there is no putting it down.

Faye, I always have had a dream of learning Latin, to help with the deeper meaning of our vocabulary, but I then I lose my focus, *squirrel* and then I'm onto something else. Let me know, though, what you think about this course! Have a great weekend!

It's an excellent course! There's a cute story running through the whole thing, starting off with "The mule is walking in the woods" (Mulus in silva ambulat) and getting progressively more complicated as you learn more vocabulary and grammar, and it also quotes lots of ancient Latin texts to show how it was really spoken, so it's loads of fun. Actually, I recommend the Teach Yourself series for any language. They have DOZENS of language courses, and they're always fun and easy to follow while also being challenging. :D

Sorry, I'm a total language geek. ;)

Thanks! I hope everybody's enjoying the weekend!

message 70: by Susan (new)

Susan (suzybop) | 90 comments My mum gave me Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts so I started it this morning before I went to work. I reckon as I had to work Saturday and there's a formula one grand prix on Sunday I've got about 7 hours maximum to get reading so if I motor through Nora quickly I might read Lucky Jimtoo and it's only 256 pages. I'm a pretty slow reader and usually allow a week per book no matter how long it is.

Aitziber Melissa wrote: "Yes, I'm reading shorties to boost my numbers and to make it fun this weekend. So here are my first two done:"

Nice, Melissa! You'll have to let me know how you found everything. :D

message 72: by Melissa (last edited Sep 06, 2014 11:55AM) (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Oh, Aitziber, I just love the Shorties list you supplied and yes, when I have a moment I will let you know! Your idea of a short novel read-a-thon needs to be our next one; it is great fun!

Now here are the next three that are finished:
-The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick (Very Good)
-Snip Snap! What's That? by Mara Gergman (great read-a-loud for young children!)
-The Worry Stone by Marianna Dengler (Nice story of friendship, beautiful illustrations)

Next unto:

The Pearl by John Steinbeck

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 104 comments So far I finished Second Grave on the Left (Charley Davidson, #2) by Darynda Jones today. That's 230 pages.

message 74: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Just finished:
-The Pearl by John Steinbeck (My Grandmother's favorite John Steinbeck, now I wish I knew why?) I liked this one myself, Very Good, indeed!

Now onto:
The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka

I hope you like Buddha, Melissa! I thought it started off great and petered out a bit; however, it was still good. :)

message 76: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments So far I love that you suggested! This is a fun read weekend with all of these shorties. Thanks, thanks! :)

I know The Pearl wasn't in the suggested lot, but all that running around and the kid dies anyways! What's up with that? I know, I know; the evil of the pearl and trying to get ahead or something like that; I'm still processing.

message 77: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments It's now about 20 hours in and I've done a little bit of reading, although I've had quite a few interruptions (shopping, a little bit of gardening and my hubby wanting my attention for a movie - time for the banner). I read FaceOff today and now I'm moving on to Eleanor & Park!

message 78: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Kassandra, how are you gardening when your away? The hubby is understandable. :)

message 79: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Melissa, we got a late start to the hotel so I ended up doing laundry and gardening this morning. I spent so much time planning my books for this weekend, I should have spent more time planning what needed to be done at the house and getting it done! Doh!

message 80: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments With all of that Kassandra, you were able to get almost 400 pages in today and that's terrific!

message 81: by Karen (new)

Karen | 289 comments I happened across this list of 46 short novels today. It's a bit late but maybe it will inspire somebody. Incidentally, #2 and #3 were tentatively on my list for this weekend :)

message 82: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I finished Son of No One yesterday after starting it Friday and am now reading The Green Mile

message 83: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 221 comments @Amber - I loved The Green Mile. Would love to know your thoughts about it. Happy reading.

As for me am still stuck with the Goldfinch. Bad headache since morning, which meant no reading :( Hoping to read at least another 100 pages, which will bring my figure to 200 pages for this readathon!

Thanks, I like the idea of the list you found Karen, maybe we could work it into a challenge or a read-a-thon, I know I've been repetitive about the shorties, but I feel a sense of achievement as I whiz through these little books.

Saturday I read a total of 493 pages and finished 6 books. Just finished the remainder of book seven, The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka wrapping up with 52 Pages for today.

Now onto Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.

message 89: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 85 comments I've managed to finish The Wizard of Oz, Fallen by Lauren Kate and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet... quite impressed considering I thought I'd be too busy to do any reading.

message 90: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Finished to today:

-the remainder of The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka; 52 pages
-The Steadfast Tin Soldier by Hans Christian Andersen; 40 pages
-Esther's Story by Diane Wolkstein; 40 pages
-Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck; 107 pages

It was definitely a more busy household today, but here's hoping to getting as much of Animal Farm by George Orwell read tonight.

I still have to go driving with my 15 year old daughter tonight. Here's to a few more grey hairs! :D

message 91: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Great job Melissa! Just think of your evening reading as the stress relief you will need after driving with your daughter :)

I should of said, "A Drink!", but I talked my husband into taking her instead. I still have not done any reading, since everyone is talkative this evening and I seem to be burning out. Renee did you say "A sexing breeze" somewhere?

Thanks Srivida! I am enjoying it thus far and so far it is just like the film adaptation that I saw first and I can see Tom Hanks as Paul and That other dude as John Coffey. I'm going to post a link to my review when I finish it in my 2014 reads list so you can read it when I'm done. I hope your head feels better and that you can get some reading done.

message 98: by Bouchra (new)

Bouchra Rebiai (bouchrarebiai) | 86 comments I never managed to finish The Shining series before the 6th.

I read the last 307 pages of Doctor Sleep over the weekend. Unfortunately I wasn't well on Sunday so I slept the day off instead of reading :/

message 99: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Hope you're feeling better now Bouchra!
