I read a book when I was maybe 8-10 (about 8 years ago, but it was a little beat up so it was probably older). The whole things is that there are kids investigating purses being stolen out of at a supermarket. They discover that the thief replaces the cart holding the desired purse with one that has the same items and everything, I believe.

Hi! I found one searching online with the same plot; it was published in 1994.It's called Onion Sundaes by David A. Adler.
Weird title, I know... Summary: When a crime wave hits the Super Big 'N' Super Friendly Supermarket, it's up to Herman "Houdini" Foster--magician, near-genius, ten-year-old kid--and his cousin, Janet Perry, to stop it.
