I assume you're talking about the 1978 version. That took place in San Francisco. A quick look at a map shows Petaluma, Pinole, and Palo Alto in the "general vicinity" of San Francisco. Hope that gives you some direction.
Ah. I assumed it was the telling of a movie filming (like a making-of book) so I figured that would have been the 70's over the 50's. Didn't realize it was fiction.

The town in the first book is Sierra Madre, CA. You can go have lunch and look at the town square where the pod people were distributing pods.

First book is based on a Kids perspective about a Film crew coming down to his city in California, I get a blurry image of the city staring with a P....But I'm not 100% sure. um.. Somehow they end up being chased by someone i believe or running away from someone around town, They had the movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" filmed there and towards the end of the book he says," If you ever see the movie,Im in the bask ..something something.. wearing green alien shirt,,yada yada"...Thats all i can remember, Will be hoping for a reply :) Thanks
