I'm looking for this book, which I read as a child mid 1970's - the main character is Jessica. She moves to a new neighborhood (I think Cape Cod) and meets Christina. Jessica is awkward and shy; she believes in magic. Christina doesn't really believe, but she goes along with all of Jessica's attempts to make magic work - gardening with "spells" (one to rot, one to grow, two for the"something" three for the crow) and sprinkling sparkly dust to try to get to Oz. Christina helps Jessica assimilate in her new life. Unbeknown to Jessica, Christina is actually ill.

Omg I have looked for this book for 20 years! Yes this looks like the right book.
