15.3 - The Chunnel

It is the 25th anniversary of the Channel Tunnel, a rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent, England, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and the French president, François Mitterrand, in a ceremony held in Calais on 6 May 1994.

Choose one option.
Required: Indicate the option.

Option 1: Read 2 books, one book 1 and one book 2.

Book 1: Read a book set at least 50% in England.

AND

Book 2: Read a book set at least 50% in France.

or

Option 2: Read 1 book.

Read a book that is set in BOTH England AND France. The England/France settings must account for at least 75% of the action.

Required:For both options, if the settings are not apparent on the book’s main page include a reference.

The England/France settings must account for at least 75% of the action. The individual proportions of each country within the 75% may be in any amount.

With setting tasks you always need to read the book to know for sure, but yes, that book works for England and France 75%+

Bea How about Somewhere in France for option 2?

Any Old Diamonds

The "Look Inside" feature at Amazon shows on the page,
Chapter 1
London 1895

After I read the book, and if I determine that at least 50% took place in England, is the above enough proof?

From FAQs
6. Can I read either fiction or nonfiction for a task?
Either fiction or nonfiction is fine, unless the task specifies that one or the other must be used.

Rina | 564 comments I read The Mystery of the Blue Train, which is set both in France and in England. Would a link to this review be sufficient for the setting reference?

Your link doesn't go to a review, but this reference would work
From Agatha Christie dot com
Aboard the luxurious Blue Train running from London to the Riviera, pampered millionaire's daughter Ruth Kettering is murdered,

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments Would you verify if this meets the requirements for books 2 (set 50% in France)?

Dead in the Water

The other paperback version (the one without a cover image) specifically mentions that the death and investigation take place at a French resort town near Antibes, but there's also this review.

Brooke | 1419 comments So, I read Baltimore, Vol. 1: The Plague Ships intending to use it for Option 1, Book 2, but upon reading I discovered that while the majority is set in France (Villefranche and Furiani), there is a flashback portion that takes place at a character's home in England. The Wikipedia article specifies the French setting for volume one of the comic, but only states that it includes "several scenes from the novel Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire in flashback as Baltimore recounts parts of his story." Only the article about the related novel specifies the exact setting for these flashback scenes ("Trevelyan Island on the Cornish coast"). Would this work for Option 2? Do I need to find a clearer reference to indicate the settings?

Can you tell from the flashback portion of the edition that you read that the setting is England? If it is established only through the novel reference, then it doesn't really fit the intention of the task.
If the setting is established in your edition, then it seems like it would fit the one book option. Include how it is established in your edition.

The Cornwall setting isn't specifically mentioned, the character (who has been established as English) just describes sailing home across the Channel, and is shown reuniting with his wife at the family home.

Ann A (readerann) | 1091 comments Can I get this approved for the one-book option?
Paris for One and Other Stories

The first story in the collection, 'Paris for One' (the first 151 pages of the book) is about a woman who travels from England to Paris for a weekend. It doesn't state on the GR main page that the main character lives in England, but there are numerous references in the story, such as "Even if she makes it to the station, she is unlikely to get a train that will take her back to England early enough for her to get home."- pg 29.

The other stories are all set in England.
