Can't get enough of GAR group reads? I was going to add another March book, since Tom Sawyer is short, but... I connected with another group of people working on popular book lists. In March they are reading a Great American Read book. If you'd like to consider joining their group read, here is the poll:

Enjoy! Just come back to us in April!

The Color Purple and Confederacy of Dunces are leading now, with Flowers in the Attic and Outsiders close behind. If anyone wants to read those books in March, jump in.

I read Color Purple last summer and I loved it. It was so much richer and deeper than the movie (which I also liked).

J. - did you read Confederacy of Dunces yet?

Yes! I've read everything in the poll except for the Godfather.

I've been told that it's satire, and if you don't catch all the cultural and literary references, it falls flat. Let me know if you decide to read it, and I'll try. Otherwise, I'm not in a hurry to.

J. did you like it?

I read Godfather when I was very young (I had to keep it hidden from my parents), and I loved it. It was very exciting and complex. Later, a lot of the scenes in the movie made more sense because I had already read the book. When you read it you'll hear a lot of quotes and references, and you might think - THAT's where that came from.

No, I didn't like it. The main character is insufferable and when you think someone will finally knock him down a few pegs, it doesn't happen. And he continues to be awful. If it wasn't on this list I would not have finished it.

Not to mention all the killings, a horse's head in the bed, the family betrayals, etc. Was that the older Don Corleone or Michael? (The movies take it a lot farther.)

Matthew (funkygman007) | 5 comments There is one plot line in The Godfather that I thought was kind of odd (view spoiler) But, it is one of my favorite books!

It's funny that I remember that too. I was 14, and it really mystified me. Now I know that it was very unrealistic. (view spoiler)

I remember that. [spoilers removed]"

That's the one! It has been so long since I have seen the movie, I couldn't remember big they included any of that.

The book is fantastic. Even better than the movie.
