I am an experienced, friendly, and above all, honest editor and proofreader who always works in close collaboration with my clients. For example, I could proofread your book in Google Docs for maximum collaboration and transparency. I could also send you regular updates consisting of manuscript files (I work with Word and Open Office) so you could keep track of my work. I deplore book editors who are as unprofessional as the one who burned you.
I can provide you with client references upon request.
For more information, including client testimonials, please visit my website.
FYI: I am currently offering 25% off to all new clients.
Thanks.

Sorry to hear of your experience; unfortunately there are some rogue people out there, but one way of checking is to see if they are a member of a recognised organisation such as the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP, in the UK; there are international equivalents), whose members are vetted and have to provide references, proof of experience, training and more in order to achieve certain membership grades. They also have to abide by their code of conduct which means the client has someone to contact in the event of bad practice such as you've experienced.
Good luck!

Hi Jared,
I'm not sure if you're still searching, but I've sent you a PM.
Best wishes,
Paula

I'm sure you have already found a great editor, but I just wanted to say that most reliable editors will only ask for a small deposit upfront or will invoice you after they have edited your manuscript. Personally, I invoice after I have completed the editing job (and luckily, in over six years, I've never had an issue with clients paying me).
Best of luck with your book!
I am very excited to announce that I am in the final stages of my debut novel! I received my manuscript back from my editor at the end of October and have since made last minute changes. I've had it through 6 beta readers who have helped me pick out a couple of small things but I want a professional to do one final sweep through. My manuscript is currently 71k words and is a drama with hints of thriller. If this sounds like something that you would be interested in, please leave your website/contact info below. If possible, I would also like to contact a reference or two after private messaging because my first run through with an editor ended up with me having to get my money back through paypal. Communication was great up until payment was sent and after that, became non existent and never heard anything back. It's a shame but after doing a google search, I wasn't the first victim. I look forward to hearing from you all soon. I do not have a hard deadline but do plan to release the book sometime during the summer.
