This is the plot of a Sophie Hannah book, Hurting Distance, although it wasn't published until 2007 so may not be your book.
Dear Laura I just read summary of Hurting Distance and you are right! Thank you SO much, it's played on my mind for years, I need to re-read to remember what it was all about and get it out of my head!Also apologies for the 2 false clues, which are entirely my sisters fault and I can't wait to tell her! - "You know you said its 100% not Sophie Hannah and we definitely read it in the 90s........." 😀

I'm happy to have helped! I think it doesn't help that 2007 is actually a long time ago now (12 years!), but it doesn't sound like it should be... I think you're supposed to mark it as solved, but not delete in case it helps anyone else looking for the same book.

I think lady detective solves but could be wrong?
Would love to know what this book was, but nobody else seems to remember it? I think it was a well known author and think the cover was similar to Sophie Hannah types?
