SOLVED: Children's/YA > SOLVED. YA Fantasy: MC can see magic as colors. MC protects somebody (princess?) when he sees red magic and defends with blue magic and it mixes into purple magic that teleports them somewhere random. [s]

Davy Davis | 13 comments I think I read it sometime between 2010-2014.

- Color Magic: I remember a scene where he watches his mentor healing somebody and the MC is surprised to see the red (destruction?) magic mixed in (killing bacteria maybe?).

- Random Teleportation: I think there's an explanation by the other person (princess?) that tells us that the plants aren't local (might be from something else though). If that's the case, maybe the MC is pushed to free-form purple magic to try to teleport them back home? This is mostly speculation.

Davy Davis | 13 comments Doesn't look like it's this. I'm pretty sure the MC was male. Also, I think the plot was a less serious kind of thing. More a traditionally lighthearted fantasy. There was conflict of course, but I don't remember anything with the tone of child abductions. More, protect the princess, Disney-villian-esque/sinister advisor/royal espionage, etc.

((Though, this does look interesting, I've added it to my reading list. Thanks))

Julia | 69 comments I don't think this is it, but in The Alchemyst everyone has an aura in a certain colour. The MC Josh has a gold aura and his sister Sophie's is silver. There is a scent associated with each colour when they use magic... green auras smell minty, silver ones smell like vanilla, etc.

SpongeBob | 9 comments Could you be thinking of The Mage of Trelian, it’s the third book in the series with The Dragon of Trelian and The Princess of Trelian?

The main character sees the colour of magic and does do some transportation, his crotchety old teacher doesn’t know why he can see the colour of magic and the main character is pretty into tarot card fortune telling. The main character works alongside the Princess from and her dragon from the other books to fight an evil wizard.

Here’s a link to The Mage of Trelian:

Davy Davis | 13 comments It's not The Alchemyst, it wasn't a modern setting. I'm pretty sure it was more generic fantasy setting with castles and nature/woodlands. I think the teleportation happens in a castle and that they get teleported into some random woods.

I'm pretty sure it's not The Mage of Trelian. It's kind of hard to tell, the preview didn't give me anything that made me think it wasn't but I don't think the master was evil. The healing magic scene happened by the master being requested or maybe responding to some emergency so I don't think he was evil. I also don't remember him being so mean but that might just be me not remembering.

Thank you both for trying.

Davy Davis | 13 comments Again I'm unsure but I don't think it's Jinx. Been putting off answering because of how unsure I was but found a summary of the story and took a closer look at the table of contents and now I'm pretty sure it isn't Jinx. Thanks for trying.

Davy Davis | 13 comments Looked through it, didn't find anything that seemed to match.

Though, I don't remember the magic being described with anything besides color. Or, not prominently anyway so I don't think it would resonate with synesthesia. Though, I may have forgotten or not reached that part yet.

Thanks for the effort.

Cassandra (abookwyrme) | 17 comments It really does sound like The Dragon of Trelian, the MC's master isn't evil in that. And there's definitely a healing scene where he sees the colours.

Still, it's interesting that colour magic is so common!

Here's the Google Books preview of The Dragon of Trelian by Michelle Knudsen - Rayah and Cassandra's suggestion:

Davy Davis | 13 comments Ah! Yes, it's definitely The Dragon of Trelian. My year-long search is finally over, huzzah!

Before I'd only checked The Mage of Trelian before and that was my mistake. Luckily it was suggested again, thanks so much.

Interestingly, I definitely remembered the tone wrong. Still looking forward to reading the series now that I know what it is though.

Thanks for all the help!
