Fiction group of people who dont know each other but connect through a bulletin board system for the 1990s I believe

I read this book a very long tine ago. In the latec1990's i believe. It was about a group of strangers that got to know each other through an electronic bulletin board system (BBS). One of the members was a war veteren (vietnam maybe?) who would mentally go underground because he suffered ptsd. Tge pivotal member was a genius. The genius has his computer control his a/c-heat, lighting, music, etc. This was at a time before it was commonplace. Anyway the group members have to meet in real life to stop this genius from doing something (murders maybe)?. Anyway yeah sorry my details are sketchy at best. I cant remember the author, book title or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive googled and googled with no success, thank you
