The novel The Secret of the Old Clock is an iconic Nancy Drew novel! When we hear the name Nancy Drew, I am sure most of us think of solving a mystery. Well this novel definitely solves a mystery. It involves thrill, adventure, and curiosity. Nancy is an 18 year old young women who is falling right into the footsteps of her Father. At the beginning of the novel Nancy has a strange encounter with a young girl crossing the road who she almost hits. Then she meets her care takes and learns a little bit more about the family. She learns that there are multiple families who were promised an amount of money when their relative passed away, Josiah Crowley. There is also talk of Cowley having multiple wills. Nancy begins to connects the dots by talking to each of these families. She feels bad for them because they are in desperate need of that money. So being the independent women that Nancy is she sets out to solve the mystery of Josiah Crowley’s missing will!
My reaction to this book was what I expected it to be. I figured this novel was going to be a story about Nancy finding a problem and not stopping until she resolved the problem. Some of the senses in this book just seemed too polished and perfect. For example, Nancy never gets in trouble for sneaking around and getting into everyone's business. She also barely gets hurt or even traumatized when she is locked in a closet for a few hours. It paints this picture that leaves the audience wondering could this be realistic story? I was shocked that there was not a bigger climax to this story. It seemed to all work out in Nancy's favor and perfectly!
