Read this book maybe early to mid 2000s I owned three in a series and I think i remember one of them being called “rewind” where a young boy uses a video camera to rewind back to when his friend drowned in a frozen lake after they were playing hockey? I also distinctly remember the books being formatted kinda strange, with lots of fully black pages throughout and like case notes on those pages. I can’t rememher details about the other ones, or if there were more to the serious I never read.

Sounds like the "Watchers Series" by Peter Lerangis. The particular book you describe is "Rewind." There are six in the series.Amazon shows a good description of the book.
