A bait n' switch type of deal. Lead detective pretends to be dating a local girl who works at main horse ranch. She also is taking care of her 4 younger siblings, and has a dog named Porkchop. They've all been in and out of foster care since thier mother committed suicide years ago.

Hunter's Moon by Karen Robards? I know that the h works at a horse ranch and is raising her younger brother's and sister's. I can't remember about how their mother died and if they had a dog, but everything else fits.

This is the book. I just found my copy and Porkchop is the dog.
