James Baldwin called If Beale Street Could Talk his strangest novel, but Classic found it “sublime”. The story is not told linearly, the language is raw rather than lyrical, and the characters are fully formed. “I don’t know how long it has been that I read something that I could say well that was great, this person is great, and I can see this person in my head.”

I loved it! So freaking good! I saw the movie before I read the book and the movie scarred me and the book devastated me.
