Hello!
It is nearly February, and with the new month poking on the door, this means we get to read a new book.

The aim of this little space here is to shed light on the spaces of society where nobody looks, the people who aren’t talked about in mainstream media, the people who are by law and/or society marginalized. The people who don’t come to your mind when you think of people in general.

Therefore, I chose A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Bernard.

One of the demographics that even in social justice movements aren’t represented and only ever just an afterthought, are disabled people. Yet disabled people make up up to 20% of the population.

Disability is an umbrella term that encompasses both visible and invisible disabilities, something we all should keep in mind.

A Quiet Kind of Thunder whisks us away into the world of Steffi and Rhys, who both deal with different disabilities. Steffi has been selectively mute for most of her life (and she knows a little bit of Sign), and Rhys is deaf, so when he shows up as a newbie to her school, it is she who is tasked with looking after him. Time passes on and soon they begin to grow closer and closer, and eventually fall in love with each other.

There is also a German and French translation of the book out there, and people with selective mutism and deafness have said it is quite good on the representation scale, so this is one more reason why I picked this one.

I must admit that I haven’t read the book yet, because January is when the semester wraps up around here. But I hope to explore and enjoy this book with you all together.

Yeah, I'll read it.
It is somewhat ironic that the mute get a voice!

It's not that they don't have a voice, they just communicate with different means.

Stella Woo hoo! Public library has this one! I've placed a hold to get it from a different branch, so can start whenever it gets here.

I ordered it from an independent book shop ( I prefer those over chains or Amazon) and I can fetch it sometime next week.

I really look forward to reading this one with all of you!

Now, having read it, I see why it means a lot to you (and for what you have shared with us - thank you again for this)

I missed saying it before: You're welcome!

Pam | 93 comments I really like how Barnard introduce's Steffi's interests and forward getting into her diagnosises and medical history. Love that she is an animal person and how that reflects the jobs she wants, her goals in life, and her current work.

Animals can be a great help when you're not really fond of people - that's how it was for me at least.
