No, they're actually a race called hani, crew of the ship Pride of Chanur, which happens to pick up a naked, pink-skinned refugee of a race nobody has ever seen before. The entire book is from the POV of Pyanfar Chanur, captain of the ship.

It's also a pretty great book -- one of my favorites by Cherryh.

(And that Michael Whelan painting is pretty much the standard paperback cover, but the actual author & title text on my printing were different than the ones already shown in GR.)

That actually sounds like a really great story line. A human from the perspective of an alien.

I'd say it's well worth checking out -- it's also relatively short (the paperback was less than 200 pages) and fast-paced.
