TCS: February 2019 Pick: The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal

Edit: Perhaps now I can get a nomination endorsement from her...

Are those actual endorsements? I went looking on twitter, but apparently I no longer follow you I guess. I wasn't sure if you made up joke quotes or actually got responses from those authors on Twitter..
I almost made a comment this morning saying "MRK is going to have to update her comment"

Nothing poor about it - it was perfect! And what timing! I miss you on twitter, by the way, even though I don't use it much.

Actually, my review of this book is by far the most liked thing I've ever posted on Goodreads - which I feel kinda embarrassed about, because it wasn't exactly glowing.
I look forward to joining in the discussion, although I'm more likely to get started on the sequel than to join the group read this month.

I wouldn't recommend it. In my opinion there are spoilers for the novels in the novelette.

And that photo is Mary Robinette Kowal approved.🙂

I read the Lady Astronaut novelette last year. Do they have the same chapters at the beginning? Sure feels like it.

Thank you so much! :-D I have weeks of ads I've written to post in the Quick Burns. Stay tuned! :-)
And awww! Twitter became too much of a toxic cesspool for me. So I peaced out.

Literally, this is how I discovered Mary and the fact that this novel was a thing. I spent the other morning reading through a ton of her short stories. ALL of which are available on Tor's website.

Speaking of, they go into the writing of this book in this episode: https://writingexcuses.com/2018/07/29...
Spoilers within, so read the book first.

Heh. You have no idea yet.

I tried, Rob. I really did my best, and was full of regrets and coffee at work the next morning.

What Ruth said.
To see how it usually goes, you can take a look at the current discussions for this month’s read of Ninefox Gambit: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Yeah, Ruth explained it very well.

YMMV. I didn't mind reading it first. I like reading things in publication order first (then going back and doing suggested orders on subsequent read throughs) unless an author specifically recommends against it.
This is timely, next month's pick (which starts tomorrow) The Calculating Stars is on sale on audible today: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Calcul...
When I did this book I did the audio and it was fantastic. Normally I'm not a huge fan of authors reading their own books, and this is one of those exceptions.
Of course MRK does narration for other people's books as well so that may be part of the reason why.
