Laurainne | 1 comments I read the book around 15? years ago. In the the fantasy, young adult, or just fiction section. Depending on what what you consider spoilers, there will be spoilers.

The main character is a boy either a teen or young adult. He's lived most his life in a glacier/mountains/tribal setting, and is an apprentice to a shaman character. Don't remember if that's what his title was. He finds his master dead one day after being sent purposely away. Ends of running partially in fear for his own life, and to discover why his master was murdered. He joins up with a group of adventurers (who are main characters in other books of this author, but I never read them) who were looking for the shaman. They settle for the kid's knowledge. Don't remember details of all their journey to the capital, but...

There is plenty of tribal like magic and natural magics. They have run ins with traps from their pursuers. The boy is oblivious to the fact that he leads them out of some sticky situations with some sort of magic of his own. He is also in cultural shock traveling through cities, unlike his very small home.

He tries to solve the murder on his own once in the capital, believes some high ranking faction is involved, possibly the king. His snooping and lack of knowledge of the city gets him thrown in jail. He escapes unknowingly with his magic again. Snoops some more, king finds him, boy accuses someone important and gets thrown on an island prison.

He once again frees himself of his chains (by shape shifting into a bear) and the seal shape shifter people notice him. They come to him and tell him what he is (a cousin of their people), shock! They bring him back to the mainland and a final conflict ensues. He gets the upper hand this time on the accused. The group of adventurers he was with help him get cleared this time and find proof of the murder. The king apologizes and claims the boy as the state's official shaman with privileges. Happy ending for now.
