Betty Q | 109 comments As I’ve been looking through my TBR list, I’m finding books that no longer interest me. I want to remove them, and I think I will remove the ones that I don’t foresee myself reading. Does anybody else do this?

message 2: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3840 comments Absolutely! It’s time to do it again. Thanks for the reminder. 😀

message 3: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I do a purge once or twice a year. I think to myself "why on earth did I add this book" and press delete. It is very cathartic :)

message 4: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (scharle4) | 94 comments I did a larger purge in November and December. I am working through the process of my physical TBR as well after I get back from a work trip. I view it as my tastes change so it’s natural to not want to read some books as I update my preferences.

message 5: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I did it in December but then when the "best of" and "most anticipated" lists and articles came out and now it's larger than ever!

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments I feel like this is something that I should do but my TBR is so huge at the moment it would take me absolutely ages to go through it all.

I usually go through my TBR in October/November when I start planning for next year's challenges. I go through and get rid of all of the books that have less than a 3.5 rating and books that I've read the author or series beginning and didn't like.

My TBR is only 300ish books, so it's not too unruly!

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments It’s funny you’ve created this topic as I did exactly that 2 days ago! It feels good to let go especially of these books that have been on your tbr for ages.

I need to do this again. To frequently I add a book that somebody says will work for a prompt but that I'm not actually interested in. And then I don't even remember why it got added to my list.

message 10: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I cull my TBR List twice a year. In about October, I start working on my Reading Plan for the upcoming year and create a list of books that I want to include. As I go through my entire TBR List to do this, I also delete books that I'm pretty sure I'm never going to read. I do my second cull in about February. I go through my lists of books that were published in the previous two years and delete ones that didn't make any "best of the year" lists or that didn't get any prize noms or that got low ratings from other readers or that I'm really not interested in. Right now I have about 1600 books cataloged (on another site, not goodreads). I try to keep it within the 1500-1800 range (which, really, is a ridiculous lot of books!).

Dang dalex! I try to keep my TBR to lower than my Read list... so the more I read, the more I'm allowed to add to my TBR.

That being said, I never look at my TBR. More often, I'm at the library or bookstore and I scan a book and see that Oh Yea, I actually wanted to read this so yay! I'd say that at least half of the books I read in a year are books that jump straight to my Currently Reading without touching my TBR.

I am using my TBR for a couple Wacky Challenges, trying to go back and read books that I was interested in years ago when I started Goodreads... it's a good way for me to not read just the newest releases.

message 12: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments My TBR is crazy, but a lot of them are on there because it’s the only way I can tag them as being on a list. Which sucks. But, I ended up keeping my main default TBR reasonably small (fixing it at the moment to just be the books on my 50 Before 50 lists and other books I really, really want to read), as I added another two exclusive shelves, a list-TBR and non-list-TBR. I mostly pretend those don’t exist. 😂

I try to do the same, and keep my TBR shorter than my Read books. But when I first joined Goodreads I didn’t realise I could add more shelves, so I added all the books I have a physical copy of but I hadn’t read to my Currently Reading shelf just to make sure I didn’t accidentally buy another copy. I now use it for the library books I’m reading as well, so that’s the shelf I’m focussing on this year and one of my goals this year is to read all my unread physical books.

message 14: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Hannah, if you want to move your books to another shelf there’s an easy batch edit feature on the desktop version 😉

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments You guys inspired me. I've had a mass culling and managed to shrink my TBR from over 2k to just under 1200. It's still ridiculous but it's a start.

I have exactly 300 on my TBR. I always want to do a cleanse but then I feel like I have to read descriptions. Which would take so long. Maybe I'll go through and delete the ones that have less than a 3.5 though. The chances of me reading a book with a rating lower than that is pretty slim.

message 17: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments All the books on my TBR list are books that I own (over 2,000) and some of them I have only added the first couple of books in a series , when I have more. So no I never clear my list as that would mean physically removing them from my house. The list here is a good reminder of what I have.

My TBR is only books I own but I still go through and do a cull every so often. Most of the ones that go straight from TBR to donation bag are charity shop finds and publisher freebies. I have a "depths of kindle" shelf that I use for ebooks I bought on a whim and I've now lost interest in, but ebooks aren't so important to cull as physical books in my small house!

I'm trying to get better at reading new purchases promptly, but my TBR is still at 451.

message 19: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments When I have read a book, I try to give it away, but the charity shops here don't take them. To put them in a Heart Foundation book bank means a long drive out, so l have to plan a day to take them, and usually end up filling it up

message 20: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) I made a reading plan for this year made almost entirely of books that I own. The TBR got so out of hand that it has over 2000 books, so I had to start a more reasonable list, and even that now nears 300 (all owned but not read). I do slip in library books and occasional books for group reads but I am trying to discipline myself to primarily clear the shelves.

I don't like to keep books, either. I find that when I really like a book, I want others to read it so I share it with friends or just take to the public library. the library will either keep it for a collection or give it away as a freebie. I've also had a very few that were so bad that I didn't think anyone needed to read them (seriously, it wasn't just that the books weren't to my taste, a few have just been really poorly written with no redeemable qualities-no idea how they got published) so I actually threw them away for the good of humanity.

"Threw them away for the good of humanity" 😂

I typically buy books I loved just so that I can see it on my bookshelf and share it with my friends. I love owning books I love.

message 23: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) I keep the ones I love because I think I might read them again, and sometimes I do. I have loaned books that I didn't get back, so I will usually opt to buy someone else a copy rather than loan them mine if the book is important to me.

message 24: by Alicja (new)

Alicja | 5 comments I just cleaned up my Goodreads TBR from 850 to around 450. I had not culled it since I started using Goodreads in 2011. I want to make a new TBR shelf of owned books by the end of the year (~140+) but I think it will be under a 100 by the end of the year, as I read books and give them away. I like to keep enough for my bookcase.

message 25: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I deleted my TBR and feel sooooo much better. I feel like I can read what I want.

message 26: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) I have considered doing the same, Marta, because it is too large to be useful at this point.
