Color and hierarchy fiction , gray stripes

When I was younger, I read a book where in the elites would wear blue, the others white/red , and the trolls, or was it mud people, would wear brown.

If you were a blue and you get demerits , you'll get gray stripes.

I think it was more of an adventure fantasy book...maybe written in the 70s, 80s , of early 90s

YA I think. I read it when I was in 5th grade. I grabbed it from my moms shelf. that was 18 years ago so I barely remember the cover. it was bluish I think.. 3 people walking down a path/mountain path
