Glad it's not just me feeling this way... I agree Buddy sounds interesting... where I paused it seems like his clairvoyance may be a form of personal time travel...

With how this is going, I may end up listening to this in chunks over the next week or so, between other books...

I see you finished this out without me... I continued without much to say sometime last week or over the weekend, and finished the last half today (soon, anyway)... and all I really have to say is that I feel like the blurb sold me on a completely different book...

I've really been pushing myself just to finish this book, and it's been a bit of a slog, really... 2-3 stars for me, I think... as aggressive as I've been with my ratings, this year, I'm leaning towards 2...

message 103: by Virginie (last edited May 16, 2019 08:13AM) (new)

Virginie | 6124 comments Eeeek, I forgot to talk about this! That shows how 'meh' this book was. Like you, I was expecting something totally different!

Boy, that family was dysfunctional. I wanted an easy, light read and got a story about miserable people instead :/

The zap: (view spoiler)

EDIT: just changed my rating to 2 stars (from 3). A book I completely put out of my mind just days after I finished it doesn't deserve 3 stars :p

Not great reads have been mucking up my month...

Started strong with Super Powereds, Johannes Cabal, Lovecraft & Carter, and Gaslight Murders... then I found out Gaslight Murders falls apart with the narrator change at book 9, and started catching up on Buddy Reads...

Dry slowed me down, Agent of Hel and Finder have been OK, Spoonbenders wasn't even that good...

Time to get back to some more historicals and new releases, I think...

Man Called Ove was a real gem, tho...

message 105: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6124 comments I impulsively jumped on too many BRs! Finder, Priory of Orange Tree (I haven't had time to even touch it for days...), Goblin Emperor... I'm super late for Super Powereds too!

Next month, I'm not doing anything but our LitRPG series BR :p
Speaking of which... I was thinking something like 1 book a week, would that suit you?

message 106: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36289 comments Mod
I didn't put much thought into what was what with Spoonbenders, but the whole book was too much of a slog just to setup the ending...

For a book/series with a lot of precog setup, I really loved Theirs Not to Reason Why... just needed to skim over the excessive gun details during basic training in the first book...

Book a week is fine for Way of the Shaman... my experience with LitRPGs so far, has been I either love it and binge it, or I don't love it and go slower or abandon... this author is apparently the one that coined the term LitRPG

I'll take a look at it! I usually love precog stories (when done well) :D

Timelord Iain | 36289 comments Mod
I loved the premise... strong precog (because of alien ecology) one day has a vision of the end of the human race... in 300 years... and spends 6 months devizing a complex plan to position humanity to defeat the threat 250+ years after she's gone... things get complicated when certain powerful people start to learn what she's up to... I'm tempted to do a reread, even tho there's no audio... I binged the series in May 2017...

Em Lost In Books wrote: "Hey!

Yea... I've got a lot of updating to do... I did a 6 month catchup on my spreadsheet challenge info over the Summer, but I need to go back and copy those inputs to this thread... THEN I need to catch up on the past 3 months, on the spreadsheet AND this thread...

In regard to the challenges themselves, I'm hopeful to have finished some of my old challenges, with the 300+ books I've read this year... my TBRated challenge was an abject failure after about March... POP SUGAR challenge looks rougher, with more things I need to go out of my way to read... and I might drop the Wheel of Fortune challenge as an open point-grabber for the competition...

And I need to make another push on my PIFM challenge... I read 5 books from the list of 13 books given by 5 people... never did get many responses back in January/February, when I made the requests...

Virginie | 6124 comments I come bearing gifts recommendations for your cover challenge!

Structures: Farm/Barn
Siege Tactics (Spells, Swords, & Stealth, #4) by Drew Hayes
(yes, it's super small and you have to squint to see it but it's a farm, so I don't care)

Structures: Monument
Have yet to find this one. I have a cover with an obelisk in mind but can't recall the book (if it ever existed and I'm not imagining things)

Transports: Carriage
I personally didn't include this one into my challenge, seemed overtly difficult to find.

Nature: Flower
The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow New Moon (Twilight, #2) by Stephenie Meyer (lol)

Nature: Desert
No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished (Heartstrikers, #3) by Rachel Aaron City of Bones by Martha Wells (yeah, there's a tower/city but it's in the middle of a desert)

Fantasy: Elf
Huh... You'd think this would be easy but I can't think of anything except the Two Towers edition with Legolas on the cover....

Classes: Cowboy/Rancher
Huuuuh... Maybe a romance with a sexy undressed cowboy on the cover? :p

Weapons: Hatchet, Hammer, Crossbow
The Heroes (First Law World, #5) by Joe Abercrombie The Blood-Tainted Winter (The Song of the Ash Tree, #1) by T.L. Greylock Blood of Elves (The Witcher, #1) by Andrzej Sapkowski // Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman // Lady of the Lake (The Witcher, #5) by Andrzej Sapkowski Sword of Destiny (The Witcher, #0.75) by Andrzej Sapkowski

Misc: Coin
Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie Red Country (First Law World, #6) by Joe Abercrombie Sharp Ends (First Law World, #7) by Joe Abercrombie
(yes, I'm pushing you towards a re-read of the First Law standalones :p)
Going Rogue (Spells, Swords, & Stealth, #3) by Drew Hayes The Copper Promise (The Copper Cat, #1) by Jen Williams

Thanks, Virginie... we'll see how much I really need, once I fill in the last 50 books I read to my shelves (I just used the wall of book covers mode in my 2019 shelves to fill in most of these slots I was missing, yesterday)... I've already got the NPCs books loaded up, Norse Mythology would probably only be a 2hr re-read, it's so short... I was thinking about reading Dune, which I think would solve the Desert issue, but Martha Wells sounds good, too... the weapons certainly give me an excuse to continue with Witcher...

message 118: by Zaara (last edited Nov 14, 2019 11:09AM) (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Elf: Unkindest Tide actually looks like it has Legolas' twin on the cover...😂
Check different editions of the Skovron covers too. They had weapons and kinda elfin looking ppl on the foreign language ones, but I haven't read the series yet so can't tell.

Flower: Bear and the Nightingale has flowers on several editions, as does Sorcery of Thorns all over the spine and back. You already can strike flower!

So that's ✌️ struck off already 💪💪 unless you want to go into fae/elf semantics and trouble yourself by entering Venn diagrams (since elves are part of the fae anyways)...

Weapons/Monument: Rogues of the Republic have a gal with a crossbow (Prophecy Con), a sort of monument which looks like London Bridge under a dirigible (Palace Job), and a hammer/hatchet-y thing with a clock face in it (Paladin Caper). You said you have them on KURL and that's 3 for three really short books. Or you can always round off ye olde Faithful & the Fallen 😂 to get your hammer. Also, those are some pretty mean (archaic) hatchet-y things on the cover of The Toll.

I dunno abt Dune...its seminal SF n all but has a really ANNOYING full of hot air Gary Stu MC...and I remember you got into a rant about mindrape in some other BR so you may not like some scenes in Dune. Did you reread Malazan 2 this year? Raraku would deffo count for desert.

Coin: all the ones with treasure storylines:
Hobbit, couple of the Harry Potters, Abercrombie like she says, Bartimaeus, Dagger & the Coin...
But hey...you may have already checked this one bcuz some old editions of Agatha Christie have coins and stylised weapons on them. Also chk old covers of some of the BRs you were doing with the mystery book club/MMM/Choko, the ones you guys were saying spoofed archaic styles. I remember thinking I'd like to read those someday. Damn, I was so sure NN, Godsgrave or DarkDawn would have a coin on them. Checked both UK and US. Huge disks...no coin...ugh! Godgrave has the "Colosseum" tho for monument.

Farm:
You may have to read a Regency romance or one of them Harlequins to get cowboy/farm...such as... Something Wonderful (Sequels, #2) by Judith McNaught
I have the ebook of that one so I knew abt it. Bear & the Nightingale/Girl in the Tower/Winter of the Witch can also be used for farmhouse/monument if you check all editions + they're already on your upcoming/Incomplete Series.

For carriage:
I found a whole selection but again, you may have to go romance or historical/steampunk.
Me...I just can't believe I found something on the internet that you didnt already 😂:

Yeah, I knew you were going to read NPCs, so it's good you can fill two slots with that :)
For info: the narrator for City of Bones (Martha Wells) is Kyle McCarley; he also did all Super Powereds & Corpies.

I highly recommend The Ten Thousand Doors of January (for flower), it's one of my favorite read of 2019. It's a fairly recent book though, so I don't know if you can get it at a decent price/from the library.

Thanks, Zaara... the more things I can tick off with books I missed or that I already plan to read, the better...

I'll definitely read those recs, too, Virginie...

I'm actually risking burnout forcing all these series reads to clear my TBR... you can already see a higher density of 3 star reads this month... to counteract lately, I've been trying to collect as many of the other books on my list as possible to create some more variety...

Got some PNR and Romances lined up, I read Helen and Troy's Epic Road Quest today, and am reading 14 right now (it's great... premise reminds me of Chasing the Moon, but a completely different tone... can't wait to see what The Fold & Dead Moon are like, since I know they're only loosely connected)

message 121: by Virginie (last edited Nov 15, 2019 02:34AM) (new)

Virginie | 6124 comments Oooh, I can use Nevernight & Godsgrave for cover with blood/a monument respectively. Thanks for the idea, Zaara :D
I now have options for every missing category :)

Since I abandoned my Standalones Bingo (not interested anymore in most of the books), that would leave only my perpetual Series challenge, my New Releases challenge and SF Tropes Bingo. Yay! :)

I’m slowly paring down... Pop Sugar challenge is interesting, but half the fields take a lot of work to find... I don’t watch much TV for example... I’m basically paring down to series challenge only here so I can do some more smaller challenges in other groups for variety...

message 123: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Hmm that's ok.
I didn't wish to causecould withdraw my noms if you are that particular abt it...but tbhonest Virginie all of us on the thread independently (we read at different times) but unilaterally loved Sorcery of Thorns...4/5 stars. It was one of our fave reads of 2019 and iaim genuinely already filled the flower slot so it just seemed unnecessary to me...to replicate effort.
But then he could deffo💪💪💪 read Doors of January AND (additionally) use it for some other slot in any of his challenges...perhaps even his shiny, brandnew 2020 one(s)!!
+ as he says, he's getting burned out with so many things left to finish/update. It's why I logged on to help search stuff altho I usually don't nominate/recommend unless specificallyasked to do so. I'm really intrigued by Elizabeth's dieties challenge tho, Gin...been eyeing that thread for awhile now...soon I guess I'd not be able to resist anymore...

And Iain, I looked at the blurb of 10k doors of Jan...plot seems cool + that sure is a nice cover + I know so many ppl here have put the book on their Xmas wishlists + I'd like to read it too = so how about it...shall we have a BR for Virginie's recommendation? Jan seems like the perfect time to read the Ten Thousand Doors of 😂 January and then everybody can join in? As a matter of fact, I truly feel the group needs more vibrant BRs rather than ppl quietly reading alone. Now that sure seems reasonable on all the fronts and checked absolutely all the boxes, wouldn't you say?? Don't zoom off and finish it alone, man.

And yup absolutely Virginie...please join to read NN Chronicles...it's a really fun series + Ghots and I will be there. And hey...you still up for the Golden Key or did you (be honest) kinda lose interest? It's been more than a year since you nominated it for the poll...😂

message 124: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6124 comments @Zaara: Oh, I didn't mean to imply Iain had to read MY recs absolutely haha. To be honest, I had this thread open on a tab and responded to Iain's post (message 122) without refreshing - so without seeing your recs (message 123).

But yeah, I really liked the book so I wanted to tell Iain to read it, challenge or no :) Though it might have been on his rader already, with all those glowing reviews from Petrik, Mayim, & Yanique :p
I actually nominated it for the January book for my other group (the one I'm mod at), and looks like it's winning the poll. I think I'll re-read it then, so I might join you guys (not promising anything though) :)
Fun fact: the audio is narrated by January LaVoy, so it's really the perfect book to read in Jan :p

About Golden Key... I want to read it eventually, but not right now, if that makes sense? I'm trying to let myself be more of a mood reader instead of trying to stick to books I have to read for a challenge/BR, and end up staring at my Kindle for 10min straight to get the motivation to read it. I mean... I shouldn't have to motivate myself to read a book, right?
That's why I abandoned my Bingo challenge. All the books are on my TBR but I just don't want to read them right now. I'm an organization-freak enough that ignoring the list & picking up another book makes me feel guilty & stressed. So abandoning the challenge is the equivalent is setting said-list on fire xD

These days, I want light-hearted books with humour, so I re-read Skyward, and now Riyria Chronicles (because Royce - Hadrian banter). If you've got recs along those lines, I'll take them.
@Iain (because I know you've read those), something with a similar feel to Heartstrickers/DFZ, Super Powereds, Threadbare or even Skullduggery.

message 125: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6124 comments Re:Sorcery of Thorns: Added to the TBR. I'm very particular/a bit weary about my YA reads. YA usually doesn't work well for me (I tend to have feelings towards the MC ranging from mild annoyance to outright hatred) but there's a few exceptions. Since you all loved it, I'm guessing this book could be one of those exceptions :)

message 126: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Great...then :p, if Iain's free....January it is...see...I didn't wanna intrude in crass ways, Gin...I know you guys read/reco a lot...and didn't know how to phrase it without hiding that delicacy (the feeling of barging in) so I super overcompensated in the politeness...😂 I'm now kinda wary of making social blunders...its ridiculous, I know.

But yeah...that really did make more sense to me.

And hey. If you want lighthearted banter, check out Jon Skovron's Hope and Red...its very like Locke Lamora, I hear...and that series [*sigh* sometimes the wait for Thorn of Emberlain seems endless] had plenty between Locke and Jean.
+ Ghost and Fin are gonna be reading/continuing that (Hope and Red) trilogy soon so "The Triad" can reconvene...
And I'm totally NOT feeling the Golden Key too...so *fist bump* ☺️ then to hell with ALL THIS politeness and let's shelve it indefinitely!!!
Deffo read Sorcery of Thorns. I dunno that you'll like it bcuz I see your thoughts on YA are typically not favourable and I remember you don't much like Harry Potter either but there's nothing much to actively DISLIKE about it and it has that similar delicious sense of whimsy.

message 127: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments 😂 oh outright hatred was me and (most recently) the MC of Dune. He was just so SELFOBSESSED...a stereotypical Gary Stu.

I love the dedication to January up the whole process... speaking of a general recommendation, I think me and Anni would both agree you should read Queen's Thief series my Megan Whalen Turner... the first book is a bit of an investment for the rest of the series... I rated it 3 stars and Anni gave it 3.5... I said it started very dryly, and took about half the book to really gain momentum, but we both rated books 2-5 five stars, and can't wait for the finale next year... the series has been slowly written over the past 20 years...

For dry humor and necromancy, I recommend Johannes Cabal the Necromancer (did you get this from my TBR for the recommendation challenge without reading yourself... or is it just missing from your read shelf?)... I wish JLH had more books I could read...

Thanks for the recommendations. Can't believe I didn't think of Locke Lamora... I was reluctant to start it & wait years for the next book, but the 'bromance-banter' thing is exactly what I want :)

About Harry Potter... It's not that I don't like it, I do but.... It's just a 'OK-slightly-better-than-average kind of series for me, not the amazing one it seems to be for other people. Even with the nostalgia factor, I don't think I would enjoy a reread that much.
But then, I don't much like Tolkien either, so I can be hated by the HP-generation Fantasy fans AND the older ones. *shrugs*

Well... read it now... I think I laughed within the first 5 minutes of the book... it basically opens with Johannes visiting hell and pissing off a demonlord while making a deal with Satan to get his soul back...

Each book is quite unique from the one before, with the main thread being the MC and recurring characters... tho whole thing was quite great by the end... the whole series basically ended by the time Johannes had a well-balanced team to handle just about any problem...

I think you should read the Blustery Day anthology before the final book, since a character is a main character in the final book, I think...

I also read Carter & Lovecraft & After the End of the World shortly after finishing the series... haven't read Katya's World or The New Girl... I think now JLH has a Patreon account for short stories, and that's about it for now...

I'm sure it's a timing thing... Harry Potter inspired a generation of readers... I actually waited what felt like forever to join the bandwagon... my Grandma brough copies of the first 2 books when she came to visit from Scotland in 1998, and I don't think I bothered reading until at least 2001, then devoured the books and all the currently released ones... but the series definitely has a focus problem... the books balloon since JKR doesn't know how to trim the side stories and focus on the main one (maybe she does now with her mystery/thriller pseudonym, I haven't tried them)...

I checked JLH's Patreon page, and was reminded that Johanna Cabal the Necromantrix is a thing... she is an alternate Johannes from a different timeline, briefly seen in one of the short stories... I think signing up for Patreon will give access to some chapters exploring the character... it's a stretch goal...

I've read the first 4 book in a row after my godfather gave 'em to me for Christmas. Must have been in 2000 I think... I would have been 7 at the time, which fits my memories :p
But weirdly, I have never been that taken in by those books like my friends were. I liked 'em, but I loved Pierre Bottero's (RIP :( ) more. He, and later Robin Hobb, are the two authors that made me a Fantasy reader.

Oh Sweety (with Evil Capitalization muhaha), thanks for the cheering :)
I meant what I wrote in a playful way though 😂 I know no-one here would hate me because of my literary taste (and if they do, I'll mess with their spreadsheet :p). Was talking in a more general way, thinking of this weird fandom craziness/susceptibility. Never really understood people getting worked in a bunch because you don't like their favorite book/author. It's not like my personal opinion invalidates theirs... *clueless shrug*
The most "toxic" fandom I've encountered so far are: Harry Potter, Malazan and... Mmmh... Grisha-verse, maybe?
A few years ago, I heard people talking about SFF books before a class I was attending (back when I lived in Stockholm). Joined the conversation, and get asked if I've read the Shadow & Bone trilogy. Answer: "Nah, I've only read Six of Crows. It was OK, I guess... Nice, but didn't give me the urge to explore further that particular universe at the moment." Man, the look on their faces 😂 Like I just kicked a puppy :p

Thanks for the cathedrals pics! You're right, I like them in an architectural sense. I did study civil engineering after all, I enjoy looking at majestic and technically superb monuments/buildings. And bridges. Bridges are cool :)

Yea... I let people like what they like and hate what they hate, but when I get someone to at least TRY a series I love, I'm over here like:

hoping they love it too...

Then there's the time I got Laura and Manju and Iniya to read Seduction and Snacks and it was a cringefest... only book I've knocked from a 5 star to a 1 star on re-read, and invented a new shelf for (what-was-i-thinking?)... clearly my tastes changed in the 5 years since my first read...
