Latin American novel about a man searching for his missing man servant.

I remember it being called Chasing Midnight. But that is apparently not correct. I seem to recall the servant has dark skin, thus the name Midnight(?) and he leaves or gos missing and it is the story of the protagonist’s search. I read it more than 10years ago, I think it was contemporary at the time and probably translated into English.
