SOLVED. Fantasy Series Similar to Lord of the Rings Late 80’ Early 90’s. [s]

I read a series of fantasy books (maybe three) in the late 80’s very early 90’s that had main characters that were small folk sort of similar to Hobbits. There was a war that was about to break out. What I really remember was that at one point the small folk were riding horses and got ambushed by wolf like creatures who had poisonous claws and one (maybe more) was scratched as they road for a hill to make a stand. I think that there were “men” and maybe “elf’s” with them. At some point there was a princess who befriended by one of the small folk. That’s all I remember.

Dennis McKiernan's books? His first books were a trilogy (The Iron Tower trilogy): The Dark Tide, Shadows of Doom and The Darkest Day.
