Celia (cinbread19) I am a 70 year old retired female who loves reading.

I hope to get ideas from people on how to make my life better. That is why I will try this group for a while to see where it is going. Most of my room for improvement is of a spiritual nature, but not this first question I have.

Has anyone ever tried a detox diet that is safe and has the proper nutrients? I am experiencing a lot of pain in my leg and 'butt' muscles, especially when I first wake up.. Someone told me to try a detox diet. So I am throwing out this question to the group.

Celia, you are the first to join me in this new group! Thanks. I have the same problem and want to get away from meds such as Acetaminophen. I have invited a second moderator (her assistant will likely do postings) who is an expert in this area: Sandy Weston. You can learn a bit more from her site, westonfit.com, but her assistant will shortly join and respond. As for spiritual, I have a third incoming moderator. He can recommend reading that can help, as can my wife, Laura. I'll try to move them along in this new role as well. In the meantime, from experience, I advise humble prayer with reconciliation (as may or may not be eating at you), the mystical side of yoga but the physical side and humor daily. I can recommend one or more useful book for the spiritual aches & pains, but I'd need to know the nature of the problem to be anywhere near on-target (losing or returning to faith, deciding on which faith to investigate, or any of a number of other specific needs. Keeping you in my own prayers!

Hi Celia, I saw you post in this interesting new group and thought I'd try it out. I'm a 40-year-old physicist, which puts me on the skeptic end of a lot of health discussions. But a couple years ago, I had a health crisis that ended up convincing me to try a lot of new things and opened my mind up to a wider array of solutions than I had previously considered. I'd like to see where this goes.

I'm replying to your comment because I have very similar problems, which may or may not be related to the underlying thyroid issue I have. I've tried a lot of stuff, including a detox diet, which I wouldn't necessarily recommend. I have found some effective solutions which may be worth a try. In order of most effective first, I'd recommend:
1) epson salt baths. emphasis on the epson salt. They really work wonders.
2) trigger point massage (DIY or professional). I read this really dorky 1980s book about it, and there's probably something more up to date, but since this is a book group I'll go ahead and be specific: Pain Erasure.
3) protein supplement. I hate that this works since it's so trendy, but hey, it does for me. Specifically gelatin/collagen, not the standard whey protein. Dunno why this works exactly.
4) acupuncture definitely works, but it's temporary and I've given up on it since it's only worth about 3 days of relief and then I have to go back and don't have the time and money to keep doing that.

Sorry to gab so much, but I thought I'd mention what works for me, because that also helps introduce me to others and the kinds of things I've found that really work, because I tried many different things.
