Ugh, such pressure :)OK, I'm going to be a little selfish here, since one of the books I want to read falls in this category, but it hasn't been on here yet and a few of my all time favorites (Watchmen and World War Z) fit the bill so for April I think we should go with Alternate History
Enjoy!
Oh, Scott, this is a wonderful pick! I just recently (last month) read my first Alternative History/Steampunk book. I cannot wait to dive into this shelf!
This isn't my favorite shelf by a long shot, but I am willing to try it! That's what this club is all about for me ... trying to stretch my reading boundaries.
It seems that this shelf has some steampunk and dystopia among other things so those that may want to try The Hunger Games, you'll find it there.Or you can also try Classic Dystopias like 1984 or Fahrenheit 451.
I got up in the middle of the night and saw the shelf pick. So I had to go to the shelf and look, didn't I?
Although I have only read one book before for this shelf (Leviathan), I thoroughly enjoyed it and have the second book of the series on my shelf waiting to be started this weekend. So, I eagerly searched for books I might be interested in.
HaHa! In just a few minutes (about 30, I think), I had come up with 10 to try! I know that I will not get to read them all, but I went back to bed a happy woman.
I LOVE looking for books!

Good shelf. I found a number of books to read. There's a huuuge number of books that I can get my hands on. I'm going back to browse some more.
Great choice, Scott.
But your link seems to be to the genre page, which isn't quite the same as the shelf.
I think alternate history is the link we should probably use. Will a mod tell us if I'm right?

Good catch, I would go with your link
Great choice, Scott! It's not a genre a read all the time, but I do enjoy it when I do. And I have lots of TBR books already on that shelf so I'll have fun choosing.

Yeah, thanks to Tara for reminding me I had to pick the next person.
Wow! Thanks, Scott! I csn't believe that I'm selected as the shelf picker. Right now I'm travelling and I'll be back to full internet acess in two days. I'll post my shelf selection then. Hope that's ok.
Oh man, Vi, the suspense may kill us all. Hope you are doing something fun while you are away from full access. Can't wait to see what you pick.
Congrats, Vi! Looking forward to your pick! Thanks to Tara for reminding Scott! I was falling down on the job!
Thanks, guys! Just got back today morning. I took a look at the shelf page and I can see only 150 shelves. I'm probably being dumb but could someone tell me how to see more than 150? Top Shelves

I believe it used to show more than that, with pages and pages of shelves for viewing. Have the Goodreads people changed something again? I only see 150 on Top Shelves now, too.
Here is the only way I found to see more: Go to Explore at the top of any Goodreads page. Over on the right there is a list of Genres. Click "More genres..." beneath that listing. That brings you to a page called Genres > Shelves, which can be directly accessed at this link:
http://www.goodreads.com/genres/list
There are only 3 pages of shelves, but those seem to be the most commonly-used shelf titles among Goodreads users. I think they are trying to re-organize every aspect of the site to reflect genres and sub-genres; while people can still create obscure, personalized shelf titles, they don't seem to publicly list and offer up ones without a significant number of users.
Unless I'm missing something fundamental, in which case I hope someone else can give another answer. :)
Oh yes...it used to show lots more than that. That's probably changed after the famous 'upgrade' that has messed up everything. I've been messing up with the URL to see if I can bring back all the shelves and so far, no luck.Maybe we should complain at the Goodreads Feedback group (if we do, more than one of us should do it.)

The other thing I do when I'm looking for ideas is to choose a book that I've liked, and then browse through the top shelves listed for that book. If it's one that many people have shelved, you get virtually dozens of pages of lists of shelf names. Clicking on any one will take you to that list. I've seen some shelf names I would never have imagined that way.

OK! I'm done with my selection. I was about to go for Folklore when I noticed that Horror has not been done before. I haven't read many Horror books before and I hope that I'll get to some (okay, quite a few) in my TBR during this month.Shelf for May: Horror Shelf

Between classic horror, monster stories, gothics, many crime thrillers, many mysteries, and lots of paranormal romance/urban fantasy-type stuff, even people who don't read a lot of horror books can find something that suits their fancy.
Yay, Vi, great choice. Not a huge horror fan, but that is what this group is all about, right? Besides, I have had Stephen King's Night Shift on my currently reading list forever. I have only read the first story, so this will be a perfect opportunity to finish it.
Vi, I usually avoid the horror genre 'cause I just do not like to be scared that much. But, when I looked at the list, I found the Sookie Stackhouse series (which I am trying to read) there as well as two books on my TBR in May list - The Historian and The Voice of the Night. So I should be able to get a couple of books read for this shelf.
Oh dear, it is looking that they've changed things, haven't they!??! I'd post a message on the Goodreads Feedback group, as soon as I can get around to it, as we use this feature a LOT (I mean, this is the whole premise our group :p) Otherwise, we may have to "re-shuffle" the group a bit...
Btw, Vi, good choice - I don't usually read horror but I'll see if I can dare myself to LOL

good choice...now i have to figure out an audiobook to gap between the one I am almost done with and the end of the month...since the next one I was going to start is on the horror shelf (yeah, totally holding off reading it now)

Kazza, I think the post to the Feedback group might carry more weight coming from you as one of the moderators. But if there's a point at which you want any of the rest of us to weigh in as well, do let us know.

i know we aren't the only group that does popular shelves...so hopefully starting one thread, will get participants from other groups
