Arlene | 145 comments Ok - DRUMROLL PLEASE - the shelf for July is:
“Western”
Since I live in Colorado, I thought I would bring you here. (maybe a challenge for my friends “down-under”) There are lots of great books to choose from on this shelf. The shelf is top-heavy with Louis L’Amour but don’t let that stop you. I thought that he was a hack author - just turning out books that are made into “B” movies, but when I read The Haunted Mesa I found that he is a very good author and very engaging. I have read many the whole Sacket series and more and enjoyed them. I also love Tony Hillerman’s books. You will also find Laura Ingalls Wilder, Larry McMurtry, Zane Grey, James A. Michener and even Steven King on this shelf. Have a nice vacation in the West!

message 508: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments Yay! Thanks! Off to check my TBR!!!!

message 509: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments mmm...hot cowboys maybe? lol!

message 510: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments I found at least one book in my TBR that qualifies: Cherish so I'll be definitely be reading that one. But I'll see if I find something else. :)

message 511: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 409 comments Oooo nice one, now off to discover the wild wild west ;-D

message 512: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments Dee wrote: "mmm...hot cowboys maybe? lol!"

Yes, LOL!

All the Rough Rider books are in that shelf so I'll try to get my hands in one of those. I think I have one of the novellas I haven't read on my iPod.

message 513: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments her new one is coming out at the end of the month...can I hold off until the first...lol! lots of Linda Lael Miller for the RRRC featured author as well

message 514: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 101 comments Great choice :)

message 515: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 247 comments Oh nice pick! I'll have to peruse my TBR list for this one for sure, it will be a good challenge for me.

message 516: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments I found another book in my TBR: Simple Jess. I'll try to read them both...if I cannot, I'll probably read this one because it has higher ratings. :)

message 517: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments I actually found quite a few books on my TBR (and I went through and marked off a few that I knew I had read, but weren't on my shelves

message 518: by Lahni (last edited Jun 22, 2011 09:57AM) (new)

Lahni | 660 comments A couple of odd books I found on the western shelf:

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - The only Harry Potter I saw
The Calvin and Hobbes books
Donner Party Cookbook: A Guide to Survival on the Hastings Cut Off - The title of this one is what jumped out at me.

message 519: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments didn't calvin used to play cowboys and indians...maybe that explains the western shelf...lol!

message 520: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 247 comments I think there are (sadly) very few shelves where Harry Potter doesn't make an appearance. I can't figure out the connection for this one.

message 521: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments Maybe, Dee. Now explain Harry Potter to me.

message 522: by Dee (last edited Jun 22, 2011 10:12AM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments ummm...IHNFI...I have no frickin idea...lol! after the fubar of making genres and combining shelves I have no idea what is going on with half the stuff now

message 523: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments I found Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche in the Western Shelf. I've been trying to think why that's there and I thought it had to do with the book being about western philosophy as opposed to the East.

message 524: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments Dee wrote: "ummm...IHNFI...I have no frickin idea...lol! after the fubar of making genres and combining shelves I have no idea what is going on with half the stuff now"

I know that my shelving choices don't always make sense to the outsider so I never judge. But that one sure made me laugh!

message 525: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments i think most of my shelves are fairly obvious and common-sensicle...most of the time

message 526: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Great shelf choice. Very good for summer reads! And I can FINALLY read Harry Potter...I have been waiting and waiting for him to appear on a shelf (wink, wink). I think this shelf will be fun to pick an avatar and a quote line for too! GTreat choice. Now off to the shelf to peruse.

I have read most of Louis L'Amore and Tony Hillerman books in the past and thoroughly enjoyed them. However, in the last several years I seem to have stopped reading in the Western genre. It will be nice to find a new writer.

I've read all of Hillerman's books, and loved them. Does anyone have a suggestion of another author who's even remotely like him? I'm having a hard time deciding from the titles on the shelf what might appeal to me and what might not.

message 529: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) I always look forward to the avatar for the month. Once again, this month's is a keeper! great job!

message 530: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments I tend to forget they change each month and then when the new one pops up it is always a fun surprise.

message 531: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 247 comments I love this month's avatar, so different from what I was expecting. :)

message 532: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 145 comments I used a combination of scientific techniques to find the randomly selected shelf picker this month. I made a list of everyone who reviewed in June then had to eliminate several of the most prolific reviewers because they had been recent shelf pickers. So for August the shelf picker is:

*drum roll*

Natasha!

Congrats Natasha! Looking forward to your choice!

(I'm very curious about those scientific techniques, LOL!)

Actually, I put each book reviewed into a spreadsheet so I could sort by member's name. (a little OCD) see my post at the end of June's post reviews with the books and the tally!

message 537: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 247 comments Yay Natasha! I'm looking forward to your pick.

I might have actually managed to start my pick for July's shelf by then. I'm a little backlogged in my reading right now.

message 538: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments Hmmm...yes, I guess you picked a year and 3 months ago...should Arlene then pick again?

message 539: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments I think Natasha should pick her shelf! The rule doesn't say someone can't be repeated, and the two year thing was just a how long it had been for Arlene's previous time as shelf picker. The two-year limit isn't in the rules. If we limit things too much, we might come up on a month where no one is eligible to be the next shelf picker. (And besides all that, how can we argue against a scientific pick!!)

message 540: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments totally agree with luann...i think if someone read and finished a book in the month the list was derived from, then they should be eligible...I can understand maybe if it had only been a couple of months, but not over a year

message 541: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments Maybe somebody should set a time limit and add that to the rules so we know what should be done in these cases? It seems we're going through this every month and time is ticking!

If we limit things too much, we might come up on a month where no one is eligible to be the next shelf picker.

If we set up a time limit and that happens, we would just waive the rule for that month.

So how about if we officially choose one year, and add it to the rules? That seems long enough but not too long. There are enough of us that I think we're not likely to run in the problem of no-one being eligible that way.

But we definitely need to limit it somewhat. There are still people (e.g., Slayermel) who've been part of the group forever, and haven't had their names come up yet. That's just how randomness works.

And I agree that we need to formalize it. How do we do that? Do we just need a ruling from our moderators?

message 543: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 145 comments Go for it Natasha - let's do one year and you pick a shelf!

message 544: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Arlene wrote: "Go for it Natasha - let's do one year and you pick a shelf!"

PLEASE pick a shelf....I am in agony here waiting for a new one to be announced!!!

message 545: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments I'm with Lynne, almost bouncing up and down with excitement ;OP

message 546: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) That's 3 of 4 mods weighing in now, (Luann, Lynne, and Slayermel) which is certainly good enough for me. Have fun, Natasha! (before we all implode from anticipation ;) )

message 547: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments excellent choice Natasha, I have many books too choose from as I have only read 3 by the time I got to the 7th page on the list :op
I'll be hitting up the library tomorrow, this is definitely going to push me outside of my comfort zone, Thank you for that. Looking forward to a change :0)

message 548: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) Interesting choice, Natasha. Off to the shelf!

message 549: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) FINALLY, now I can relax and choose a book! My favorite part of each month. Interesting shelf choice...good luck choosing the avatar! :)

message 550: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments Great choice, Natasha!

I have some ideas already. :)
