SOLVED. (Children's Fantasy) Girl with goose who can read in a Medieval society where reading is bad burns down uncle's barn. [s]

A girl can read because her dad taught her but he's dead now and she lives with her uncle who locks her in the barn every night. One day she escapes with her goose and accidentally burns the barn down. She skips town with a man due for a hanging and becomes his scribe/apprentice/tiny nuisance. They go on adventures and it turns out he is a spy. He convinces a highwayman not to rob a noble lady by telling him he's a poet and will write an epic poem about him if he lets them go. Both men actually do do that. Said noble lady is probably shady but I'm not that far yet. Murder happens. The cover has the girl holding the goose with the burning building in the background, although most of it is obscured by a slip of paper that forbids reading or something. It looks like the cover was drawn by Brett Helquist, although I couldn't find it when I looked up his name.

I really need to find the name of this book, because I lost the library's copy (Before I even finished it!) I could technically ask the librarian, but I already was a big nuisance when I thought it was the library that lost the book and I don't want to further aggravate the situation.
