So I love John Boyne novels because all his characters pull you in and you either love them or hate them. This rings true for his latest novel. Maurice Swift, along with Rebecca, are some of the most evil characters I have come across in a long time. As for Erich, we should hate him but we just end up feeling so sad for him. I would love to hear what others are thinking of this book. What moment shocked you the most? There are too many moments for me to pick just one. My first novel for 2019! Lets hope all the books I read this year are just as fantastic!

Hi Michelle! I really loved this book and read it in a week, which is fast for me! Erich certainly did some terrible things, but I don't hate nearly as much as I hate Maurice. I'm very curious to read other books by John Boyne!
While definitely dark, I thought it was an excellent book. I always find Boyne to be a great story teller. His portrayal of the characters he writes about leaves you definitely hating or loving them!
I found Erich to be evil, but realize he was very young and under a great deal of Nazi influence. His life was very sad because of the decision he made.
Without spoiling the book for anyone each character Swift interacted with ended up with shocking moments!
I am an optimist and believe you will find books this good as the year goes on. There are lots out there!
