list of characters - Paperwhite

About 3 months ago I bought Amazon's latest Paperwhite and, while I am happy using it, one big drawback with it is the lack of an ability to formulate my own List of Characters.
I'm 74 years-of-age and, though tech-friendly - not very tech-savvy!
Apparently some ebooks contain their own List of Characters which can be found under "X-RAY".
Of course, most ebooks would NOT contain a List of Characters - but Paperwhites and Kindle eReaders should offer a facility whereby the reader could formulate his/her own List of Characters if he/she wishes on his/her ereader!
At present, when reading on my Paperwhite I have a copybook beside me to write down the List of Characters - and a short description for each of them.
This surely is against the spirit of ereaders and is crazy as Paperwhites or Kindle eReaders should offer this facility.
I'm hoping you can help me.
