This one is a little bit tricky at first glance, but there are plenty of options!

Recommendations:

By the Shores of Silver Lake - Laura Ingalls Wilder (middle grade)
The Golden Compass - Phillip Pullman (middle grade/teen)
The Radium Girls - Kate Moore (teen/adult)
Black Gold - Marguerite Henry (middle grade/teen)
Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik (teen/adult)
Neon Pilgrim - Lisa Dempster (adult)

Katrina Slayton | 25 comments My husband is insisting that I read "Blood and Gold" by Anne Rice for this prompt. I'm not sure though.

Laura L Meinecke | 25 comments I finished The Radium Girls. It was highly fascinating and also emotional. It was amazing how the companies these girls/women worked for blatantly kept safety information from them. The aftermath of the cleanup from these companies was still going on in 2015! (The incidents happened beginning in the 1920's).

Nikki (mnnikki) | 164 comments I, also, read The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore. I agree with Laura - so many emotions! Rage at the companies, care and respect for the women and their families, anger at the lying doctors.
