ABANDONED. sci fi, finding alien Technology of portals to other worlds

sci fi book about human explorers finding an alien world with remains(buildings) walking down lots of stairs to a vast room with lots of portals/gates, hundreds?(not operating when found),room is like a transportation hub (like airport) to other worlds. the scientists investigate and try to figure out the gates and what happened to the civilization (i think if i remember correctly).read clear back in 80 to early 90.

Darren, what do you they find on the alien planet - no inhabitants? signs of destruction or warfare? How does this planet appear to be different from Earth?

Somewhat similar to the alien portal found in the Star Trek TNG episode "Contagion" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contagi... ?

no inhabitants, cant remember if ruins, or if like abandoned (i think it was abandoned everything looking in good shape), a mystery that they are trying to solve. ill check out episode, dont remember it off hand.
