Science Fiction book about a woman who's child is kidnapped and taken underground where there's an entirely different race living. She goes on a quest to find it. I read it about 10 years ago. Everything's pretty foggy on it but sometimes it comes back into my head and I've never been able to find the title of it again. Time period in the book was recent, I'm pretty sure it took place in the US, and the book was written in English. It was quite graphic and might be included in the horror genre. Any help greatly appreciated!

Can you tell us more about the main characters - child's age abd gender, mother's jobs/skills/interests, who and where is the father, etc.?

I want to say the woman was part of a scientific expedition team and the child was around 10 and male. I can't remember but I also think the father went missing at the beginning of the book. They discovered cities inside with these monsters and there were battles. It's crazy how much I can't remember but it is still pushing for me to find it... Thank you!

I don't think it's The Descent, but how about Deeper? I think it meets most of your description but I can't remember the details and might be mixing the two stories up in my head.
