I'm only on pg 68 but already I'm dying to know what is going on in this creepy little town. It's all I can do not to flip to the end to see, but I don't want to spoil the surprise. So, just based on a few pages in a long book, I'd say go ahead and get started on this one. I'm really liking it so far.

Daniel James | 62 comments I'm starting Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories.
I never got around to reading Lovecraft but I've been intrigued for awhile. I just hope the racism is kept to a minimum. A racist character/s is one thing if it's for a story, but ignorant views by the author tend to take me out of the scene.

I recall liking Thinner, but it was a good long while ago and my memory can be pretty questionable on occasion.
But look on the Brightside, even if you don't like it, at least the novel is indeed "thinner" and not an 800 page disappoint, ha-ha.

message 605: by De Lijkendanser (new)

De Lijkendanser (malicious) 120 days of sodom but had to take a mental break from reading dark and bleak literature so I am letting it rest until I finish this Dutch translation of David Walton called the Plague if translated literal but for those interested I thought it was called the genius plague by David Walton. Not really horror but I find the general gist of the story quite unsettling.

Cthulhu isn't too bad with the racist stuff as opposed to some of his other work. However if it's a theme you want to explore, he wrote a seriously disgusting racist work The Horror at Red Hook which was reinterpreted by Victor LaValle in The Ballad of Black Tom which is an amazing piece of writing. And although Red Hook is his xenophobic rant, reading it first gives you a better understanding of what LaValle was doing, and I can't recommend Black Tom highly enough.

I've got this on my bookshelf. It's a bit of a doorstopper so I've been put off reading it but sounds like it'll be a good one. Look forward to your thoughts.

Well, I'm getting a Twin Peaks, Wayward Pines, X-Files feel from the story.
Does that help? :)

Err, I'll probably see how it goes with the Horror at Red Hook, haha. But I'll keep an eye out for Black Tom, thanks for the suggestion.
I wish I got around to reading his work earlier tbh. I've only read Dagon and The Statement of Randolph Carter so far, but I really enjoyed both.

I've read nearly everything HP wrote, including the stories he ghost wrote for his disciples, and I can't recall his racist views having much if any appearance in the majority of his works. There may be some subtext here and there, but for the most part his stories are just Sci-fi/horror tales, period.

The three I am reading are:

The Montauk Monster by Hunter Shea by Hunter Shea (just been wanting to read this book for awhile)

Tomes of Terror Haunted Bookstores and Libraries by Mark Leslie by Mark Leslie (just something that came across my library feed that looked interesting)

Thanks for the rec! I checked it out and added it to my never ending TBR. :)

I'm currently reading Hollow Kingdom Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton . I'm about 2 pages in and I already know that this book is something special.
