Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments I finished Grave Goods last night. I love mysteries from this time period - 1100's, time of King Henry II.

I started Paper Wife for the group themed read.

Hi Pooja. I'm going to ask you to move your question to our folder for recommendations which you'll find here.

Start a new topic and ask for recommendations for series there. Thanks.

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished Wakenhyrst. It was just ok. I only added it to my wishlist because GR featured it back in november as a horror book and people were giving it good reviews. It really wasn't horror. It was not scary at all. You could call it gothic i guess. It reminded me of His Bloody Project: Documents Relating to the Case of Roderick Macrae a little in the way the story was told. We know right from the start that something has happened and the diaries show how things transpired. Moving on to The Testaments now.

Kristie | 19338 comments I just finished After the Fire. It was really good.

Next up is Midnight at the Blackbird Café before it is due back to the library.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just started reading Brooklyn and I am a little over half way through listening to The Paragon Hotel.. Seems funny to be reading books set on each coast of the USA at the same time. The Paragon Hotel is in Portland, Oregon.

message 1412: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments How are you liking The Paragon Hotel so far? I have that on my wishlist and I keep wavering on whether or not to get it.

Thanks, Renee. I had planned to do that, but have not yet. The beginning is rather slow and I already have questions.

Oh, Janice - buy it or get it from your library, but listen to the audiobook! I finished it last night. If I were not so biased towards about her book about Holmes and Watson, I will tell everyone that this is my favorite book of hers yet, and I already said that about Jane Steele. The narrator, January LaVoy, did a fantastic job reading and voicing the text. It really is an interesting story and the setting and locations in Portland are spot on.

I do like January LaVoy as a narrator.

I was going to say that I didn't think I'd read anything by Lyndsay Faye, but I read Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson. I think you enjoyed that one more than I did. I have The Gods of Gotham in my "to listen to" shelf.

message 1418: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments I finished Us Against You this afternoon. I didn't think it was as strong as Beartown, but I did enjoy it.

Back to the book I paused for the buddy read - A Brightness Long Ago. I have something like 5 hours to go.

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments I finished A Brightness Long Ago on audiobook. I struggled with the Italian names and it took me a while to figure out who was who. I still managed to give it 4 stars.

Next up on audio is The Lake House.

message 1426: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11675 comments I started Small Island yesterday and I'm enjoying it. It is very well written with great characters. I'm the having to tear myself from it to finish The Wayward Girls. That pne is very slow. I want yo get to the end to see what happened but I'm not enjoying the journey!

I've started Me last night. It's a 2019 release and will fit the movie mania challenge. You've got to love those glasses on the cover:

Roz | 4554 comments Birds of a Feather finally became available. Every time I looked there was a long waiting list. I hope the wait was worth it.

message 1430: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The waits at my library for the Maisie Dobbs books are always long, Roz. I hope you like it.

I’m 63% into Brooklyn and enjoying the story. It is a strange story. I grew up in the same timeline, but on the opposite coast of the country. Maybe because I was much younger than the young woman MC, but the only thing I can identify with at all is baseball.

message 1431: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4554 comments I agree with you about Brooklyn. It was a bit strange, not a lot of real action. It's an immigrant's story. I'm sure there were a lot of young women that came to America, lived in rooming houses and worked in shops of some kind while looking for ways to better themselves and find husband. I couldn't identify with anything in Eilis's story, not even baseball, unfortunately. I learned to like that once I was married, moved to the States and had boys.
Let me know when you get to the end. I'd like to know what you think of it.

Jayme | 4580 comments I'm in the middle of The Huntress. If I finish it by Dec 2nd, I may have to change my historical fiction vote for the GRCA. It is that good.

message 1439: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments I finished Song of Solomon, which was a 3.5 stars. It made a great discussion in my book club last Monday. I am glad we picked it.

I plan to finish today La ciudad, and then Beartown is in queue.

That's what I did. I just finished it 2 weeks ago.

It's on my December plan. I'm excited to hear that you're enjoying it.

message 1442: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments I started The Lake House the other day and only listened for 10-15 minutes while driving around the city. I haven't had a chance to get back to it. The next few days won't allow for much listening time so I think I'm going to put it back on the shelf for now. I've got a full slate of books for December and if I continue with this chunkster (22 hours), I'll be delaying my December start.

I know how you feel. My December "dance card" is full for books and of course half of my library holds are now available!!

message 1444: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments Janice, maybe you'll be able to start your December reads early by cutting that one out for now. It'd be good to start the month feeling ahead of the game.

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments That's likely what I'll do Kristie. I might get a head start on Out of the Easy.

I finished it last night, Margo. It was ok. I never cared for the MC at all. (view spoiler)

message 1449: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I also finished The Moor, which I really, really liked. I am currently listening to Justice Hall. It is my first time listening to one of the books in this series. The narrator is okay but I think I enjoy my own "voices" for these characters.

I missed reading The Glass Woman with the group, but since I finally got it from my library on Wednesday evening, after waiting all month, I started it this morning.
