I responded to a thread on twitter about what is the scariest book you've read. I put down three:
The Shining
The Haunting of Hill House
Hex. Beside this one, I put "I kept waking in the middle of the night, expecting to see a figure standing at the foot of my bed staring at me." Thomas Olde Heuvelt liked my comment. You did too, Margo. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments I finished Seer of Sevenwaters. It didn't have as much of an appeal to me until a bit further on in the book, but I still really enjoyed it.

I'm started Flame of Sevenwaters today. That will finish off the series for me, and will count towards the movie mania challenge.

PattyMacDotComma Liane Moriarty’s first novel, Three Wishes, Is an enjoyable introduction to the author of the world-famous Big Little Lies (which I loved).

Kristie, I loved it. I gave it 5 stars. It's about a part of history that I knew nothing about, but she's got such a way of making things seem so alive and real. I think it will make a great buddy read for you and your friend. There's a lot to talk about.

Kristie | 19338 comments Excellent! Thanks, Tricia. I'm looking forward to it.

Margo | 11675 comments Finished Ship of Destiny last night. I loved the Liveships series but this, IMO, was the weakest book. Still a solid 4 star listen though.

I've started The Testaments and later today I'll start my IRL bookclub read, The Warden

I have that one on my list too. I keep moving it from challenge to challenge and really should get to it soon. Let us know what you think of it.

PattyMacDotComma I think Aussie author Heather Morris's popular The Tattooist of Auschwitz, based on a true Holocaust survivor story, has probably introduced a new generation of readers to the reality of Hitler's Nazis.

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments Finally! I finished The Goldfinch. What a slog through 771 pages. If it wasn't that we're discussing it at my irl bookclub on Wednesday, I would have quit a long time ago.

I will start the November challenge read, The Wicked Deep.

I think I'm one of the few that didn't love that one. I thought it was ok, but didn't live up to the hype.

I'm afraid I'm going to be odd man out at bookclub on Wednesday - again! When I sent out the reminder, most replied how much they're loving the book. It's always good to have a dissenting voice. We can't all agree, or there wouldn't be anything to discuss.

The last time I raised a raucous was when we read The Girl They Left Behind. I've been waiting for the right time to raise my objections in the group themed discussion.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Glass Woman for November's group read. I really enjoyed it and rated it 4 stars, although my actual rating is closer to 4.5 stars. I highly recommend checking it out if you are a fan of well written historical fiction that has plenty of twists and turns and will make you think. It's a goodie! Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now going to start The Starless Sea. I really loved The Night Circus so I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about this book!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed The Glass Woman so much Lisa.

I'm also interested in hearing your thoughts on your next book.

message 1378: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11675 comments Hehe, I enjoy being the dissenting voice. It mak3s for a better discussion! I will remove the goldfinch from my wishlist I think. I was a bit tentative about it anyway. Is there much gang violence in it Janice?

I finished my irl book club last night. It is my turn to host and I choose The Warden. When I was ordering copies from the library the librarian looked at me strangely and said "that's a bit old, we may not have it". IT'S A CLASSIC!!!

Anyway, they did have it (which I knew having already checked the system) and I really enjoyed it. It was full of gentle humour as it questioned the establishments of the Victorian age. It made me think about morality in a different way than I am used to. The narration was by Nigel Hawthorn who played the part of Sir Humphrey in the TV adaptation of Yes Minister. I adored that book and the series. The humour in The Warden was of a similar vein though not as LOL funny, more a gentle chuckle.

Popular opinion says says book 2 of the series, Barchester Towers, is even better so I immediately ordered that though I may go with the audible version as the narration is more to my liking.

There is a little gang violence, but not much. There's much more about drug addiction with descriptions of drug use and being totally wasted. The book was over-described in everything, so this got a bit monotonous.

Paper Wife will qualify for the Group Themed Read. If you pop over to the discussion thread and discuss the book, you will earn a badge for it. I plan on reading it myself and will add comments to the thread as I read it.

Actually, Nell and Lady will also qualify.

Hopefully I can finisht hem before the end of the goodreads choice awards as I wanted to vote in the awards. I've not read any other books listed. I'm enjoying both of them so far but I'm still quite early on with both of them. I put 'Salem's Lot on hold for now.

Margo | 11675 comments Finished The Testaments and really enjoyed it. I didn't watch series 2 of The Handmaid's Tale as I found it too dark and violent so I wasn't sure if I'd be ok with this book but I need not have worried, the story picks up about 12 years after the end of the finest book. It is nowhere near as dark as the show. I can't really comment without spoilers so will just say if you enjoy well written dystopian fiction pick this up, it's worth it.

I started Us Against You.

message 1392: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11675 comments Completely forgot that I also finished The Girl in the Red Coat which was an interesting story. It's unfortunate that I ended up reading two missing child stories at the same time, one for the annual challenge and one for the monthly as I ended up getting them mixed up in my head. I had to put The Flower Girls asside til I finished this one.

message 1393: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments I finished The Huntress and The Girl They Left Behind. There were both good. I enjoyed The Huntress more, but was surprised to know that The Girl They Left Behind was based on the experiences of the author's family.

I'm starting After the Fire today.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments A Letter of Mary This is one of my favorite series. I had thought I read this one. It is a very fun surprise to realize I had not. I love this series. I do admit a couple of the later books get very silly, Their is one book involving pirates. If the char were a real person, I think she would have been embarrassed by what the author made her do,

Lilisa | 2770 comments My ears are with the monthly book The Girl They Left Behind. My eyes are with Know My Name - which is powerful. I have about a quarter of the book left but already know it’s 5 stars and voted for it in the Goodreads Choice Award. Incredible writing about such a traumatic experience that made headlines around the world in 2015 and when the sentencing was handed out in 2016.
