What Are You Reading? - 2019
I am reading The Girl in Red. I am almost done. I had to stop for a minute to catch my breath and relax my shoulder and neck muscles. SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN!I am switching to A Pocketful of Crows while I drink a cup of coffee and calm down.
Yay, I finished a book. It feels like ages since I have. I read Sword of Destiny which I really enjoyed. Going to start Year One for the group theme read. Nit read anything by Nora Roberts before.
For some reason I thought Nora Roberts wrote romance novels. I was surprised to see you read a book by her Sarah! Then I clicked on the link and realized I've always had the wrong impression..
She writes a lot of romances, some paranormal and also the In-death series which are mysteries set in a near future universe. As far as I know, this is her first pure sci-fi series. My mum owns Year One on audio and, as we share a library, it is on my tbr. Looking forward to your thoughts Sarah
So far I'm enjoying it .but I do love a viral outbreak (in fiction). There's bit of a twist on this one which is interesting . See how it goes . It has a high star rating , so I'm hopeful .
I also own Year One on audio, so I'll be looking forward to reading your thoughts on it Sarah. I also think of her as mostly a romance writer and noticed that this book has romance as a main page genre. I'm thinking other people also think of her a romance writer and just automatically added it as such. I'll be curious to see if it has a romantic aspect or not.
I listened to the 5 hours of The Calculating Stars whilst driving with my hubby. It is engaging. I love the narration! It another case of author self-narration that really works. It is an alternative history with a strong feminist message.Mary Robinette Kowal is well known for reading the Rosemary and Rue series and many other works. She is multi-talented!

Ah I see . Well then I'm doubly glad that you're enjoying it then. I wouldn't want to be responsible for you buying a poor book.

Yes, it would have all your fault for pointing put its existence hehe! I actually bought it for Pete, he likes sci-fi. His favourite subject is time travel but stories about flying and astronauts are way up there. My mum loves thrillers and mysteries and we all share an audible Library. That means that I end up with a lot of books, some I leave but I can't resist a decent book hence my massive TBR! IT is handy for challenges though!
I finished Fingersmith. It was great. Sarah Waters has a knack fir making the reader see life through the eyes of the characters she creates. Wonderful story 😊I have now started The Trespasser
Margo wrote: "I finished Fingersmith. It was great. Sarah Waters has a knack fir making the reader see life through the eyes of the characters she creates. Wonderful story..."How many hours was the audiobook? Just curious.
I'm currently listening to The Jungle Book. I think it's ok. As is typical of me and classics, I don't love it. I'm looking forward to finishing it soon because I have a few other books lined up that I'm really looking forward to reading.
The Rowland Sinclair historical fiction mystery series just keeps getting better! 1930s Sydney, Snowy Mountains cattle camps, crooks, and a tight-knit group of friends.Miles Off Course by Aussie author Sulari Gentill is #3 and the best so far.

I just started The Grace Year and so far it's really engaging. I have a feeling that it's going to have some similarities to Lord of the Flies. I'm at 17% and so far I'm still in the first chapter. I'm wondering if this book is going to have any chapters. I went ahead abut 10 Kindle pages and still didn't see one. I'm definitely beginning a new section of the book, so I'm thinking there may not be any. I find that interesting.
Reading Return to the Enchanted Island: A Novel - interesting. I'm wondering how the story will conclude.
Lilisa wrote: "Reading Return to the Enchanted Island: A Novel - interesting. I'm wondering how the story will conclude."The story summary indicates this is a "prize winning-novel", but it does not say what prize. Are you reading an advanced copy? The expected publication date says November 2019.
I just finished The Jungle Book and will be starting Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl.
I started Wesley the Owl. I was initially surprised by the story because I thought it was going to be about a young girl bonding and growing with her owl. I'm sure it was the subtitle, "The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl," that made me think that. So, I was expecting cute childhood stories. This "girl" was an adult and a scientist when she adopted the owl. It has a whole different vibe than I expected. Also, so far there has been more grossness than I expected. lol I'm at 18% and enjoying the story, just not what I expected it to be.
I'm working right now, but this afternoon at the hairdresser I'll start Plum Pudding Murder. Something quick and easy for the movie challenge :)

The book won the Prix du roman de l‘Océan Indien - it was originally published in French. Yes, I'm reading an advance copy of the English translation scheduled for publication this November.
Janice wrote: "It's a very interesting story, Kristie. I love owls and really enjoyed the book."I like the story so far, it just wasn't what I was expecting when I started. The descriptions of Wesley's behavior are very cute. Though, I have to admit after hearing what the first few months were like, I wouldn't want to be an owlet mom.
I am reading Alice by Henry. Was this a group read? I am trying to remember how I hear about this book. I am not liking it. It is too brutal. It has char. which have the names of those in alice in wonderland but the do things like rape girls as they eat them. Not my knd of read
Renee wrote: "I am reading Alice by Henry. Was this a group read? I am trying to remember how I hear about this book. I am not liking it. It is too brutal. It has char. which have the names of those in alice in ..."Yes it was. I just mentioned it actually over in the "animals on the cover" thread!
Renee wrote: "I am reading Alice by Henry. Was this a group read? I am trying to remember how I hear about this book. I am not liking it. It is too brutal. It has char. which have the names of those in alice in ..."It was definitely brutal! A very dark read.
So the holidays have started for me, and I'm ready to take on the 6 books I have checked out from the Library, and the 6 reserved books ready to pick up. The first one,
I knocked off this morning after starting it yesterday. The relentless pace made it easy to keep on turning the pages. I started reading it for the psychological thriller task, but was very happily surprised to find that the main character had red hair (task for the movie "A Little Stranger"). Now I have a spot for psychological thriller (A Simple Favour) - much easier to fill.
I finished reading The First Girl Child. I stayed rather detached throughout the book. I didn't feel that I ever cared enough about the characters to be carried away by the story.I've finished all my audiobooks listed for September. The oldest audiobook on my tbr is Succubus Blues so I think I will read it. Hopefully I can slot it into the movie mania challenge.

23 and a half hours Cherie. I would just fit it in to a short toppler LOL It didn't feel like a long book though and I was sad to finish.
Kristie wrote: "I'm currently listening to The Jungle Book. I think it's ok. As is typical of me and classics, I don't love it. I'm looking forward to finishing it soon because I have a few other book..."I enjoy some classics but, for me, Kipling is the wrong author! He is a pompous colonial.
I'm listening to The Trespasser. It is good but I feel like many of the later books in the Dublin Murder sqad could have used a good edit.
Shirley wrote: "So the holidays have started for me, and I'm ready to take on the 6 books I have checked out from the Library, and the 6 reserved books ready to pick up. This is a colourful, fun books for kids. I highly recommend learning and using "Kakistocracy". You'll be glad you did.The Dictionary of Difficult Words: With more than 400 perplexing words to test your wits! by Jane Solomon has a few that tested me, and I'm pretty wordy.

Boy oh Boy: From boys to men, be inspired by 30 coming-of-age stories of sportsmen, artists, politicians, educators and scientists by Cliff Leek is a terrific addition to any library where young boys can't miss it.

I'm reading
It's not what I expected - the narrative is going in an entirely different direction. I'm hooked.

I usually enjoy Harris and I am interested to see reactions to this one before I jump on board!
I am reading A Pocketful of Crows
for the monthly challenge. It is a fairytale. I imaging the MC as a tree nymph, of whatever the norse equivalent was as the story is obviously based on Norse mythology, but so far we haven't been told what she is. It is a fast read and I got to 90% when my eyes closed :-0 The illustrations are beautiful, detailed pencil drawings.I am out and about today so I will start my audiobook
.
I thought I'd heard it all about Scientology, but I had no idea how criminally evil their activities have been. Aussie investigative reporter Steve Cannane wrote a blistering exposé, and every allegation is footnoted. Fair Game: The Incredible Untold Story of Scientology in Australia is, indeed, incredible.

Like Margo, I have enjoyed most all Robert Harris' books I've read. This sounds very different. Interested to hear what you think.
Finished and enjoyed Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man's First Journey to the Moon

I revisited Jane Eyre this weekend and listened to the audiobook narrated by Nadia May. It is still a five star read for me. I am looking forward to reading Jane Steele before the end of the year.

Maybe it's a "borrow from the library book" so you won't have buyer's remorse if you don't like it and quit! 😂
