What Are You Reading? - 2019
I finished Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal for the themed read. I'll start Spirit's End tomorrow. This will kill the series! There's a killer loose. *evil laugh*
Colson Whitehead’s new historical fiction is only barely fiction, and it is infuriating! Even the worst of The Nickel Boys deserved better than the slavery that passed for a reform school.

I finished my challenge read, More Tales of the City but haven't had time to post it. My son and grandson came for supper tonight and I had no online time. It was a nice visit so I don't mind. :)
Sarah wrote: "I finished Faithful Place for the movie challenge. I enjoyed it but i guessed a few things early on and i didn't find the end all that satisfying. It was very atmospheric, emotional ..."I didn't know there was going to be a Witcher series! I have at least 4 of the books unread, better get my skates on.
I'm glad Faithful Place didn't disappoint. It wasn't big on on the who-done-it, as you say, that was pretty obvious, but for character study, she can't be beat 😊
I finished More Tales of the City the other night. I've been slack about updating my status lately. I'll start Blood Rites later today. This is book 6 in the Dresdin Files. It's been a while since I left off on that series and I've forgotten a lot. I'll have to google and see if I can find a synopsis of the series to refresh my memory.
I finished The Wall. It was very well written but I found the ending unsatisfying.I'm now listening to Gillespie and I.
I tried to cancel my Script membership but they offered me a free month so I'm trying listen to as many as I can lit in before 13th august!
Finished and LOVED Peter the Great: His Life and World by Robert K. Massie

I recently read The Wall Margo. I was OK with the ending and must say, this book freaked me out a bit. Took me a while to stop thinking about the possibility of being a Defender at some point in my life!

Now I get what all the fuss was about! Just read Gillian Flynn's bestselling Gone Girl. Twisty story with twisted people. Not perfect, but very entertaining.

For a complete change of pace, I read Mahatma Gandhi by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara and Albert Arrayás, which is an attractive introduction to the non-violent protester for justice. It's for the very young, but it will help their teachers and parents learn about him, too.
4★ My review with several pictures
I finished The Illumination of Ursula Flight for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" challenge. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...I'm now starting The Turn of the Key which is technically a "just because" read, but I'm wondering if I will be able to slot it into the Movie Mania challenge.
I finished Goodbye, Vitamin for MM challenge and Lanny for toppler. Lanny was wonderful. It was magical, dark and unexpected. Three of my favourite things to say about books 😊I started Fuzzy Nation today for the monthly challenge.
I am reading one of my least favorite genre. Memoirs lately seem to be all about childhood abuse. This is a subject that really upsets me. My F2F club selected The Liars' ClubI am actually enjoying it. Yes its about a child growing up with alcoholic parents. The children in the book are strong. The main char reminds me a little bit of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird.
I read Brújulas que buscan sonrisas perdidas for the toppler. It was pretty forgettable. I also finished 1984 yesterday, and I liked it more than I expected.
My book club pick for next month is March, which I picked. I am very happy to finally read it. I will start rereading today Little Women as a warm up.
I finished The Fatal Flame on Saturday. This is the third book in the Timothy Wilde trilogy that Jannene, Dom, Tricia, Jayme and I have been doing as a buddy read. I still cannot quite get the ending out of my head, but I was glad to give the last book 5 stars and a 4.5 star over-all rating for the trilogy. I started The Man Who Spoke Snakish yesterday.
Sandra - I hope you enjoy Little Women for your run up to March. LW is one of my favorite books of all time, mostly because I loved Jo and Laurie so much. I never paid much attention to the mother in the story, until after I read March.
Cherie, so far I've read 2 chapters and it is delightful. I've read it so lo g ago that I barely remember the plot. I remember the characters, though.Have you read the other 3 books in the series?
I finished Spirit's End which is the final book in the Legend of Eli Monpress series. It feels good to kill another series!Tomorrow, I will start City of Girls.
As usual all the books I put on hold became available at the same time. I'm almost finished listening to Skeletons at the Feast. I really like this author. I read The Sandcastle Girls about the Armenian genocide. This one is about people moving west across Germany during WWII for various reasons ahead of the advancing Soviets, all trying to escape. it's very good. I'm also reading The Au Pair (half done, should go quickly) and The Island of Sea Women about haenyeo ( female divers living on the Korean island of Jeju ). Waiting in the wings, impatiently, are The Lost Girls of Paris, The Night Visitors , The Long Flight Home, The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter, and The Silent Patient. It'll be a race to see what I get to finish.
I just put aside a couple of books because I had a buddy read planned, so I'll pick them up again as soon as I finish the scheduled read. I need to plan these things better. I am reading The Long Call and Daisy Jones & The Six.

I'm listening to the audio and it's like listening to one of those old band documentaries where they interview a bunch of people and cut it together for tv. I can almost picture all these people being interviewed.

I put a couple of my books that I had started onto my started-but-not-finished shelf to get them off of my currently reading list until I can get back to them.I am still making my way through The Man Who Spoke Snakish but I started Acceptance because it came off hold and I really wanted to kill off a trilogy.
I cannot figure out if it is making things that happened in the first two books clearer yet or not. It is written in second person. "You this and you that." It feels weird.
Peggy wrote: "I'm reading Mariana for my movie challenge."I enjoyed that one, Peggy. I hope you like it too.
I finished The Turn of the Key. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Tonight I will start Lord John and the Private Matter. It's a "just because" read.

Cherie wrote: "Lisa wrote: "Tonight I will start Lord John and the Private Matter. It's a "just because" read..."Do I need to finish the Outlander books before reading Lord John?"
No, I don't think you need to read the entire 'Outlander' series before reading 'Lord John', Cherie. The Lord John books mainly take place during the years covered in Voyager so if you have read up to and including 'Voyager', you should be okay. That is how it has worked out for me, I stalled on the 'Outlander' series after 'Voyager'. Also, I know a couple of people who have read some of the 'Lord John' books without reading any of the 'Outlander' books and they understood them perfectly fine and from reviews I have read on here, it seems a lot of people have done the same.
*Edit* I just checked on Diana Gabaldon's website and she confirms the 'Lord John' books can be read separately from 'Outlander' and you don't need to have read 'Outlander' to read 'Lord John'.
I finished listening to Skeletons at the Feast and loved it. Wonderful all the way through. I finished reading The Au Pair, a faster read, more than just good but at the end I had to draw myself a map to keep the characters straight. Now I'm moving on to The Lost Girls of Paris. A co-worker's husband read it and said it was very good.

I'm about half way through Longbourn. It's OK but Daisy is a hard act to follow.

I know! It was a bit too close to what's happening now to be a comfortable read. One bit that sticks in my mind was (view spoiler)

I was a bit disappointed with it unfortunately :(
I've started The Mad Ship for a buddy read.
I finished City of Girls. It has a high rating, but I gave it 3 stars. There were parts I really liked and other parts that dragged.I will join Peggy for the buddy read on The Mad Ship.

Oh, that's a shame :(. I really like 17th century history so that may have been why I enjoyed it more.
I like history too. But I thought there was too little of it, and the (view spoiler) didn't really work for me.
Ghost stories, revealing diaries and murder! What more could you want? The Stranger Diaries by Elly Griffiths will keep you guessing.

Peggy wrote: "I like history too. But I thought there was too little of it, and the [spoilers removed] didn't really work for me."I agree that there could have been more set in the past. As is often the case with duel timeline novels, I usually prefer the storyline set in the past over that set in the present. That was definitely the case with this.

My Review: www.goodreads.com/review/show/2564960831"
I just got that one for review in the mail today. I was concerned by the line in the blurb, "The Serial Killer isn’t on trial. He’s on the Jury." I thought how could that happen? What are the chances of someone who committed a murder being chosen to be on the jury? But, I figured I'd give it a try since there have been a lot of positive reviews. I'm hoping I don't have to suspend my disbelief too much.
