Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm going to start The Husband's Secret. I've had it on my ereader for ages. Not sure what to expect though, it's not my usual kind of book and friend's reviews on GR are all over the place.

Margo | 11675 comments I,ve finished Things in Jars - eventually! Not sure why it took so long to get through. The writing was good but the didn't hang together that well. Didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped too.

I think I'll be moving on to The Rapture.

The first Liane Moriarty i read was Big Little Lies which set the bar ridiculously high so all of her books that I read since have been disappointing.

message 906: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I hate it when that happens!

The Husband's Secret is 400 pages, but a very fast read! I'm enjoying it, but not loving it.

I have several authors like that. Where am I supposed to find the time to read them all?!

Same! I've read several of Liane Moriarty's, but have several others that I've added multiple books by the author that sound good, but never got around to them.

I enjoyed The Husband's Secret, but it wasn't as good as Big Little Lies. I've read 4 of hers and Big Little Lies was my favorite (fortunately not the first I read!). I think I own a couple more and still have 4 on my TBR to get to.

I picked up Nine Perfect Strangers, not sure why as I didn't enjoy the last I read by her. It's got to be a hadit now - I see a new one, get caught up in the hype, buy it, see the reviews, regret it LOL I still haven't read it!

I really enjoyed it .

message 912: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I'm reading O Jerusalem. This is technically listed as book #5 in the series, but the story line actually takes place during a time that was reported in The Beekeeper's Apprentice, but it is expanded. I like it much, better than I did the actual book #2 in the series. I thought it was only a short story when I downloaded it.

message 914: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments I bought Nine Perfect Strangers too, Margo, but I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by her. This one has a lower rating though. I’ve heard it’s not her best.

So did I.

message 916: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11675 comments I finished The Rapture and I really enjoyed it. It was based on the true story of an English cult that came into existence after WW1. The author had done lots of research and used many original documents to construct the novel. Interesting insight into the General Strike, a time in history that I'd not heard much about. It was well read by Imogen Wilde.

Next up is The Illumination of Ursula Flight.

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments I'll be finished The Spirit War today. There's an hour left in the audiobook. I had scheduled Age of Legend as my next read but I hear it ends on a cliff hanger, so maybe I'll hold off until the next book is published.

I'm not sure what I'll start next with August just around the corner. I'll put my thinking cap on. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments Decision made. I started Scrublands. I'm really enjoying the story so far. I think it's going to be a twisty turny ride.

PattyMacDotComma I was surprised to find that Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is not his usual reassuring self in Louise Penny's sixth in the series, Bury Your Dead. History, mystery, and haunting flashbacks in Old Quebec make for a good read.

Margo | 11675 comments I finished The Illumination of Ursula Flight. It went straight onto my favourites shelf! Wonderful book full of surprises, I think I'll remember Ursula for a long time. Also, what a beautiful cover!

I think I'll go for something totally different next; either The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant or The Golem and the Djinni.

I'm going to bump The Illumination of Ursula Flight up my TBR pile now. It sounds so good! I agree about the cover, it's stunning!

Also, I adored The Golem and the Djinni so my vote goes to that one 😉

Sarah | 18550 comments I just finished The Heartland: Finding and Losing Schizophrenia for a netgalley review and movie challenge. I'm now starting Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal for the group read. I might squeeze it in to the movie challenge too if I can.

Yay! I hope you enjoy it.

Caligula is quite good so far. I'm hoping for a really fascinating character study and I'm fairly confident it's going to deliver on that front.

Janice (jamasc) | 60107 comments I finished The Blessing Way and Scrublands. Both fit my Movie Mania challenge.

Tomorrow, I'll start More Tales of the City in paperback for the August challenge. I'll also start Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal on audiobook for the themed read.

Tonight, I will read another short story in The Complete Sherlock Holmes while I wait for the calendar to turn a new page.

We're going to do a buddy read on The Priory of the Orange Tree starting Sep 2. I hope you'll join in on the conversation. You might want to take notes.

PattyMacDotComma I just enjoyed a re-read of an old favourite, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. It's been adapted as a play and a film more than once, and it's as powerful now as ever. People haven't changed.

Excellent review Patty. Unlike yourself, I read this for school during my GCSE year, (so I was about 15), and I enjoyed it immensely. We read it aloud in class and then watched the movie. I have re-read this book a number of times and enjoy it ever time.

message 942: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4554 comments I was listening to The Last Year of the War read by Kimberley Farr. I had to abandon it, not because I don't like the book, but I really don't like the way it's read. I'll borrow a kindle or print version at a later date. I don't usually do that, but it's a long book and I don't think I want to tough it out.
I decided to listen to Skeletons at the Feast instead read by one of my favorites, Mark Bramhall. Good combination, an author I like read by someone I could listen to all day.

I think it would be a great one for a school conversation, Anna. The relationships are complicated and could easily represent almost any random group of people trying to belong.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I bailed on Caligula. I was finding it quite slow, dry and bland. I'm undecided whether to give it one more try somewhere down the line or whether just to give up on it altogether.

On the opposite end of the scale, I am really enjoying The Illumination of Ursula Flight.

Glad you're liking Ursula but it's bad news about Caligula! Maybe the audio will be a bit less dry :-/

You will have to let me know what the audiobook of Caligula is like, Margo. If it's good, I may have to give it a try and see if I get on better with it.

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished Faithful Place for the movie challenge. I enjoyed it but i guessed a few things early on and i didn't find the end all that satisfying. It was very atmospheric, emotional and thought provoking though. I am being picky i guess. The series is awesome and i love the author's writing style. Now on to Sword of Destiny to prepare for the netflix series and it will also count for the movie challenge.
