madrano | 23742 comments I want to again thank you for posting BookTV listings, Alias. I’m reading the above-mentioned book by Cox. This isn’t exactly what i had been seeking but that is because i was unaware how early Africa Americans settled West. The Northwest Territory (today’s Ohio, Indiana, etc.) was open as a no slavery area and many former slaves migrated there. (To be fair, the enforcement was lax, so slavery was present.) Indeed, this migration of African Americans was bigger than the “Great Migration” of the 20th century.

As you can see, i’m learning much about our country’s history.

She zeroes in on the African Americans who settled there and the horrors for these freed people are disappointing. I had not heard this history previously.

madrano | 23742 comments Having recently completed reading Casey Cep's Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee, i'm interested in hearing her speak. I'd also like to catch Robert A. Caro's talk. While i've never read any of his books on Lyndon Baines Johnson, i read an excerpt from his book about writing, which the above talk is following. I found it informative and interesting.

I seldom hear anyone talk about C-SPAN Book TV. Anytime I've mentioned it, people tell me they never hear of it. :(

Even here on a book thread, I don't think many watch the show when it airs or watch any of their vast library of shows it on their computers. I think it's sad as it's such a rich resource.

So I keep posting their TV line up in the hopes of spreading the word.

message 94: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23742 comments I'm glad you do post these, Alias. You are right about not many people knowing about it, which is a shame. I suppose the problem is that when viewers pass it when they are surfing the tube, it's members of Congress droning on, who can often put us to sleep.

I wish they had a budget for advertising beyond C-Span.
