Matt I guess we're showing our youth here, but I also personally remember that scheme from Office Space (1999), instead of Superman 3 (1983).

Turns out it is called salami slicing , as well as simply penny shaving.

Well, it was over 30 years ago, so I’m sure I’ve forgotten the exact details. I’m guessing they changed the system as a result.

Maybe it was over 40 years ago, then. That would explain why I have such an imperfect memory of the scheme.

I’d rather know the facts than pretend I’m always right. I’m baffled by people who behave like admitting they were wrong somehow diminishes them. I think someone loses face (and definitely my respect) when they cling to an obviously incorrect view after being given the facts.
