also, food isn't great so one day at school someone, maybe police type people, come and give the kids "nutrition pills" and the main character boy doesn't want to so he hides them I think. he notices that the kids are growing and getting really strong and things like that

Plot:
Teen boy living a boring life in tiny apartment with parents ts, had a twin but she died/is no longer in his life.
He has nightmares a lot about "tellieheads" (people with TV's as their heads. Turns out the sister is living in space, if I remember correctly, and for some reason I think she has a pet monkey. The authors last name starts with A-D but I can't remember more than that.
