how are the movie Holly and the book Holly different?

This is a question for those of you who have both seen the movie and read the book: which is better? I have to admit that though I cried while I was watching the movie (probably because I'm slightly depressed and I kept imagining that either me or my husband-in-a-month would experience something along these lines), the longer I think about it, the less I like it.
The way the relationship between Holly and Gerry was depicted was... I don't know, just flat. Of course, there are flashbacks in which we can see their happy moments, but the general impression I had was that Holly was a totally unlikeable person. Complaining, materialistic, unhappy, grumpy, I have no idea how this relationship managed to work for such a long time. Also, I don't like the idea that Gerry had to die in order for her to start developing her potential... I mean, in good relationships partners are supposed to support and inspire each other, so why would she wait for, like, 10 years, to make her dreams about creating art come true?
How is her potrayal different from the book?
