SOLVED. YA book about a boy who might travel through a parallel universe [s]

I think I read this book back in 2008 or around that time. My copy didn't have a cover so I don't know the title or the author. The book starts with the boy coming back from a (eye) doctor appointment because he doesn't pay attention in class and stares off in space. His mom is heading out somewhere dressed up and she is looking for her gloves before she leaves. I can't remember what happens next but I remember he "fell" into the tv program and ended up in Germany in the 40s or something. I think at the end of the book he ends up back where he started in the kitchen and his mom's other glove is seen in a painting.

Isis, what was happening in the past? Who did the boy meet? Did he time travel to just one place and time?

I think there was a war going on. I think the first person he met was a news reporter. I can't remember anything else about the story.
