evofox (brycereads) | 49 comments reasoning for 2019 bingo challenge
mistborn: heard it was good and havent gotten around to reading it. won some fantasy novel awards .
calibans war: enjoyed book one so going to read book two at some point. interested what will happem mext.
dead beat: fun urban fantasy series. trying to get up to date befor next book comes out.
mondaiji: volumes one to six have been translated to english. really enjoyed the adaption. light novels are meant to be better then adaption.
a court of mist and fury: a large portion of main characters are fae.
eye of the world: both fantasy types. need to read this. it has been reccomended to death.
a certain magical index volume 2: has powers that would befound in sci fi novel (rail gun, teleportation, etc.) technically both but the early stuff focuses more on science side then magic.
high kings tomb: cheating slightly with this one. not found/ discovered but they become more mainstream and more people are familiar with them.
queenslayer: really enjoyed book one of series. this and the final book inseries come out this year so stuck the one that came earlier down.
the gunslinger: never read anything by stephen king even though keep meaning to. this series is meant to be good.
knights shadow: loved book one and want too read more. just wanted to use this for a square and fitted best here.
handmaids tale: technically a reread.
magical kingdom of landover volume 1: really enjoyed characters and world. sadly never finished series.
voyager: no clue what genre this book i: like series but having fair bit of trouble with book 2.
shadow black: reichis enough said.
crooked kingdom: second part of duology. book one had mixed opinions from me book two should at leat finish things off.
hataraku maou san: quite funny light novel series. main character is a demon and some support cast is angels i think
the light fanatic: or terry pratchett in general
bleach: reading first omnibus due to never finishing series and really enjoying it the first time around

Lost Planet Airman | 766 comments Some thoughts I had, looking at your commentary on your list:
For The Gunslinger, treat the first book as an allegory. The rest in the series are fantasy, some getting more metaphysical than others, but this first one is meant to have a more representational feel, I think.
For The Light Fantastic, I found it helped to have read The Colour of Magic first. But then, the first time I read these, they were the only two Discworld novels...

Enjoy! :-)

Sarah | 3167 comments Hi there! I hope it’s okay to add my two cents (which are exactly that, my two cents). I love Stephen King. However, I don’t know that The Gunslinger is the best introduction to his work.

For me, The Gunslinger was tough because I’d already read so much King by then. It was missing some of the elements of his work that I’ve fallen in love with over the years.

I’m still trying to gather up my courage for book two because I’ve heard that’s better, but honestly if I’d started with The Gunslinger I don’t know that I would have gone back. This is not to say The Gunslinger is bad- it wasn’t, it just wasn’t a favorite for me.

Lost Planet Airman | 766 comments Yep, Sarah's right -- The Gunslinger is radically different for Mr. King. I'd say it compares to his other work like The Giver compares to something like Divergent. (Maybe.)

And I might have misread your statement of "suggestions are welcome since i am drawing blanks..." into "comments are welcome". Oops. Well, if I have burdened your topic, you can use the "delete" buttons on my comments, without rancor!

Have fun with the challenge!

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3167 comments Yes- same goes for my comments. Mike I was trying to think of a good place for starting King if someone wanted to give him a try and sort of drew a blank. I was thinking The Green Mile but it's so long I don't know if that's a good place to start either.

And honestly I'm not discouraging reading The Gunslinger at all, I'm just trying to say that if you tried it and didn't like it, not to discount him completely. He has written so many things, some of them great, some of them meh, it's hard to judge him based on a single book regardless.

evofox (brycereads) | 49 comments out of curiosity i have two small questions: one, how do you strike an item off a list after you have finished reading in goodreads? two: how do you conceal a small spoiler without doing the whole thing?

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3167 comments strike through is and before and after the item you want to strike, without spaces.

Spoilers: (view spoiler)

Again no spaces. If you are on a computer you can clink the link above the comment box that says “some html okay” and it will explain them to you. Hope this helps!
