(view spoiler)[This has been a bit of a slow start for me. Which is odd considering the level of violence right from the get go. I think perhaps because it came so early, before I had a chance to develop an emotional connection to the characters?

At first, the story was sort of boring, but once Prince Dain asked her to become a spy for him, that's when I got really excited. It was sort of confusing why she was consuming poison in small amounts though? I didn't realize that someone could build up immunity if they take small amounts of poison. Also, I wonder who she thinks is going to poison her? I'm also very intrigued to see who Taryn is going to marry. Even though it was sort of cast aside at this point in the book because it's mainly focused on Jude right now, I have a feeling that the person that Taryn is in love with will somehow affect a lot of things later in the book. (view spoiler)[So many things are happening right now! I can't believe that Taryn's secret was Locke. I honestly did not expect that coming. Also, another thing that I never saw coming was when most of the royal family was killed, but I wasn't too surprised that Madoc was the one who killed Dain. At the beginning of the book, I liked Dain, but once he made Jude stab her hand, I sort of knew that he was gonna be evil. I feel like there were so many plot twists that just happened. I have a feeling that Cardan and Jude will become a thing soon, and sort of already expected it from the beginning of the book. This book turned out to be way more interesting than I thought it was gonna be. I'm very eager to finish the book now! (hide spoiler)]

I had a bad feeling about Locke since the start, so I wasn't too surprised that he's a louse, but I hadn't expected the depth of Taryn's resentment and betrayal. Girl, how can you watch your intended try to bed your sister and then still want to fight over who gets him? Surely there are other pretty faerie boys? Literally any other one. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[So many of the twists in this I saw coming a mile away, but like well done tropes, they just made me more excited to see it play out. For all that it started slow, the last 150 pages was a runaway freight train. I had to read it all in one sitting; I just could not stop.

I am a little sad at the breakdown of the relationship between Jude and Madoc. Though I hope, in time, he will come to recognize she's the most like him and find a way to be proud.

Carden and Jude sitting in a tree... yeah, I can be on board with that. Much as I hate the pulling pigtails excuse for his awfulness, I can see them challenging each other to be better, now that they are on more equal footing.

(view spoiler)[Wow! This was such a good book! There were so many plot twists that I didn't expect at all. Honestly, I sort of shipped Cardan and Jude from the start, but I'm so happy they're together! I mean, I know that his behavior at the beginning of the book was immature and mean, but I feel like I sympathized with him more once I got further into the book, and he had way better behavior by the end of the book. The relationship between Taryn and Jude was sort of sad though because it didn't really get resolved, but then again, Taryn acted pretty stupid, so I'm definitely not blaming Jude. I feel like Jude changed a lot throughout the book because she was sort of innocent (but still angry) at the beginning, and then she sort of became more independent by the end of the book, which I think would be a good trait for her to have as a queen. I'm so excited to read the next book now! (hide spoiler)]

I'm not sure whether the story is good or not.

I like the idea of serving as a spy but here it's written not in the best way. I'm currently reading the other book Grave Mercy and there the spy line is major and is written better. So maybe I shouldn't have read those two books together.
I also like that there are fae and human relations.
Maybe I have to reread the first chapters but for now I don't get the Jude's position. On one hand she is the daughter of a very dangerous man but on the other hand she is just a human and like a servant to all the fairies.
Also I wonder if there is a way to become a fae or if Jude is actually a fay and doesn't know it yet (at least it would be nice if she becomes one).
And the final thing. I wonder how all this acorn line is going to unwind. For now it's the most mysterious and interesting one.

The second part of the book was so predictable. I'm quite disappointed as expected much more.
I don't like that the author killed the prince-to-be-king so early. He was a great character and I wanted to learn more about him.
Also the spy line was so messed up. The setting was great but it went to nothing. Just killed the prince and that's it. Nothing happened to the information they've gathered, not even tried to execute the plan. It feels like the line was made just to pass the spies to the hands of Jude.
And Cardan is so annoying! So brutal at the beginning (which I like) and became a total doormat towards the end...
