Angela Jr. | 1126 comments I noticed that when i use the sheet on my phone, it takes forever to update, whereas it updates instantly on my laptop. But i use my phone 99% of the time, so i just have to accept the delay 😛

message 452: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I use my laptop the most to update but my tablet updates sync fine. It could be due to how people have their devices setup for syncing, updating, etc. Most devices will let you cutomize how it links to net and data transfers.

Virginie | 6109 comments Have extra sparklines on my sheet, and rarely have a delay. But then, I never had those issues last year when several people were experiencing them so... :p

I am so jealous I would love to have that kind of time to read.

Yea... I kinda stumbled onto that mid-question... I wondered if it had something to do with how the data is collected... that sparkline is layered behind a Switch trigger, not to mention all the other layers of formula baked in... the added SPARKLINE graphs are a bit more direct in their data gathering, and simpler...

It could also be a false positive, or correlation vs causation...

Between multitasking, being a fast reader & ave audio speed at 2x, I am getting a decent amount of books in. Having a ton of fun exploring LitRPG books. Most of them are around 300 pages and narrated by a solid cast of talented narrators.

My determination to be more willing to DNF a book has helped. Though I haven't actually done that yet.

I've been reading almost entirely physical books. This has slowed me down a bit but I'm ok with it.

Iain, I'm also interested to see how I'll do overall because I'm stepping way back from BRs, 1-2 a month most likely. I am doing two challenges (incomplete series and overflowing shelf) so I'm doing good on bonuses from those too.

I updated my formula in B2... instead of just telling me how close to 1st Place my team is, it now tells me how much of a lead my team has, when we're in first

=SWITCH('Main page'!C74,0,"Points above #2: "&'Main page'!C13,"Points to #1: "&'Main page'!C74)

C74 needs to match the cell with your team's point difference in the hidden table on the Main page... C13 is the same for everybody, since it's grabbing the point difference of 2nd place in the sorted list near the top...

The formula will break & return big numbers if people ever leave the sorted list at the top in Pages mode...

message 461: by Virginie (last edited Jan 16, 2019 04:20AM) (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments To avoid the issue, you can use MIN('Main page'!C71:C73) instead of 'Main page'!C13 to get your points lead :)

That way, you're taking data only from the Team Ranking (Points) table, not the one with the SWITCH between points and pages.

Good call, for us Tome Raiders... and whoever is in C71 can just use C72:C74... but what about the middle teams that would need MIN(C71,C72 or C73, C74)?

EDIT: never mind... you can just use commas in the formula... or you could make the formula generic for all teams with MIN(filter(C71:C74>0))

message 465: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I'm still in Read Everything All the Time mode. Basically, reading is 4th in my make time for list. That's where it was last year. I am basically reading at the same rate I was last year minus reading slumps. Reading slump months had me read about 35 vs 60-80+.

My time is already blocked for other stuff later this year. I figure I will end up getting in 25-40 books starting March.

I did not plan on having a YaY LitRPG romp. Which has been great! I should shake it up with a romance rampage later. 📑📑📑

Soo earning 10 points per day isn't THAT crazy to me... I averaged 7 points per day in 2018... it's how many pages she has to read to accomplish that... I earned 7 points per day reading 400 pages last year... she's reading 750/day because she's not doing that many Buddy Reads (not that there are even enough Buddy Reads to pull it off, anyway)... and Buddy Reads and Challenges don't help as much anymore, anyway... my 400 pages/day this year only earns me 5.5 points...

message 468: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Hailee, number of books don't matter. Read for fun and enjoy your time doing it. 😁

I have personal mini projects, goals & expectations that add to my reading romps. I let myself down on a handful of side goals last year. It all works out and I am happy doing what I like.

I wish I could enter scientific journal articles that I read so I could get some joy out of them, because I just spent a whole day reading a stack of papers and none of it was any fun.

Hailee | 2764 comments Soo wrote: "Hailee, number of books don't matter. Read for fun and enjoy your time doing it. 😁 ..."

Very true. I'm pretty happy with what I managed to read last year. I could probably have fitted in more books if I read ebooks and audiobooks as well as paperbacks but I personally don't happen to enjoy reading in those formats so a few years ago I just stopped reading on my kindle, like you said reading should be fun. I like the act of sitting down with a physical paper book in my hand so I'd rather read less overall but really enjoy the time I do find to read.

message 471: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yanique, sci journal articles are meant to make you squint your eyes and dig for meaning. Kidding! Okay, half kidding. LoL

My last dive into science was reading about genetics and modifiers that lead into a side jaunt into birthrates and outdated statistics.

Hailee, I love my print books the best! But I enjoy the ease of access and multifunctionality I have with my gadgets. =)

As the groups gets larger we're having trouble keeping track of what needs to be added for new buddy reads. Could you set up the following as described from the mods forum?

What if we had our spreadsheet brethren put a sheet in the team page for buddy read adds. The person wanting the read adds the book name in the format [ book:Scourge of the Betrayer|13279692] and the author name. We then put the link in there and change the color of the row to red showing it's completed. We put the new details in a locked thread with just directions and no replies.

Hey Sheets experts! Could you check my sheet? - I don't think all the books I put in are coming up in my stats (I think others also had this issue so I'm guessing it's the same problem).

message 475: by Virginie (last edited Jan 20, 2019 02:37AM) (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Alright, I put something together.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

I can copy it to the competition spreadsheet if you Mods want, but I'd advise against it since it will slow it down.

The orange cells are input for the person requesting the BR: Title, Author, Starting date (double click to enter the date with the calendar thingy) and the Goodreads URL of the book (copy-paste the whole thing).

Next is the cell to put the BR link. The whole row will color green once this is filled, so you can easily see which request has been fulfilled and which is still pending.

Then, a cell for Mods: it will give you the BR info in your usual format. Simply select the cell, copy and paste to the BR Master list. For example, for the Scythe BR that was requested, it will give:
2/20 [ book:Scythe|289541891] by Neal Shusterman

Virginie | 6109 comments Jenna wrote: "Hey Sheets experts! Could you check my sheet? - I don't think all the books I put in are coming up in my stats (I think others also had this issue so I'm guessing it's the same problem)."

All fixed. There was two issues;
1. Some dates were not recognized as dates but text, and weren't taken into account in the monthly tallies formulas
2. Some dates were entered "backwards" (the European way, not the American) and were counting for the wrong month.
(for example, January 5th was entered as 05/01 and not 1/05, and thus was considered May 1st).

Since there's not way to individually assign a local 'format' to enter the date, I gave you the same treatment as the others: I changed the date format so that the month is spelled so you can easily see if there's a mistake, and you can enter the date by double-clicking on the cell and using the mini-calendar that pops up.

Improved a little with a few useful links and the number of requests to take care of.

If there is one (or more), the cell A1 will go bright red, and clicking the link on it will take you to the next request to be taken care of.

SO.... I finally understand how you're using regex in the new sheet...

\d = digits
\D = non-digits

This means, I also know why your formula doesn't work: you're just replacing all non-digits with blank space...

This is fine for some books:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... RETURNS 11250317

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... RETURNS 289541891 instead of just 28954189

So, basically any book that's part of a series won't work...

LUCKILY, I have the fix...

Replace =REGEXREPLACE(D3,"\D+", "")
with =REGEXREPLACE(REGEXEXTRACT(D3,"\d+\."),"\D+", "")

What this does, is TRIM https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... DOWN TO 28954189. and then remove the .

If you want to be super safe, make the formula =REGEXREPLACE(REGEXEXTRACT(D3,"show\/\d+\."),"\D+", "")

This trims the URL to "show/28954189." then trims it down to the number in the middle... in case there's some weird case where another #. appears later in the URL

This is going to throw a #NA error in every blank row, unless you add another layer of formula to check whether D# is blank before running the other formulas... just an FYI... since the parsing column is hidden, and the Mod-helper column stays blank, it shouldn't matter much...

SO: the final formula is =IF(ISTEXT(D3),REGEXREPLACE(REGEXEXTRACT(D3,"show/\d+\."),"\D+", ""),"")

If D3 is blank, then so is this formula... otherwise it plays with the URL/numbers...

Oooh, nice.
Problem: your formula doesn't seem to take into account that some books have a dot after the digits ID, and some have a "-".

Example: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

That was much easier to fix, once I remembered we could use [.-] to choose a character from a range of options... it even removes the need for \ as an escape character, which is needed for characters with special regex meanings, in most cases...
