My Year in Books
Nicole R wrote: "For me, I always shelve the version that I actually read if reading it in hard copy. ..."Nine times out of ten, I also do this, though occasionally I can't find the edition I read. Or, I should qualify this with - I look for the cover, and assuming it matches pbk, hardcover, ebook, etc, that's close enough for me. I do look for the cover first, but then do my best to match with the format. Sometimes I can't find the cover I'm looking for, or the format listed here on GR doesn't match my cover (in that case, I pick for the cover).
Jess wrote: "Oh how fun! I am not quite as prolific a reader as many of you but I've read more this year than any year before so I'm pleased with that...."Your own personal best is always the best outcome!
Joi wrote: "On the shelving topic- I usually try and shelve the version I actually read also- with the exception being audiobooks (C'mon 14 CD's does NOT translate to 14 pages, lol!)...."On my own spreadsheet (and in a group over at LT), I keep track of page numbering and for audios, I pick a number somewhere in the middle of all the options. That is, if there are different editions with 356, 394, 415 pages, I'd pick the 394.
Funny thing, though. I wonder if GR doesn't include audios in it's average page count? When I saw the GR summary yesterday, I went to my thread on LT and averaged out what I've figured out and it was only a few pages difference.

Feel free to use in future. It really does bring home that point...

😃😃 So happy to have added to the entertainment today, Joanne!
My shortest book was 20 pages, Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience by Rebecca Roanhorse and the longest was 960 pages - 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die: A Life-Changing List by James MustichMy average rating was 3.8. The book that I read which had the highest rating was Crochet Kaleidoscope: Shifting Shapes and Shades Across 100 Motifs by Sandra Eng.
The most popular book I read was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, read by 5,811,451 people!! Better late then never, I guess!
The book least read by others was Rídan The Devil And Other Stories 1899 by Louis Becke - I was the only person who read it, Hahahahaha

Shortest Book: Sea Prayer at 48 pages
Longest Book: The Outsider at 561 pages
Average Length: 308
Most Popular: Lolita which is interesting in that I didn't like this book at all
Least Popular: Thanksgiving: The Holiday at the Heart of the American Experience read by only 74 people
My average rating: 3.7
Highest rated on Goodreads: The Hate U Give

re page numbers for audio editions. The GR librarians guidance is that the "page number" for audios is the length of the book rounded to closest HOUR. So "14 pages" for an audio equals 14 hours length.
Book Concierge wrote: "re page numbers for audio editions. The GR librarians guidance is that the "page number" for audios is the length of the book rounded to closest HOUR. It really seems a fairly useless way to report "pages" in an audiobook unless you specifically want to count up the time you spent listening. Which would be a good stat, but I don't see how you can separate that from your other stats in the annual summary.
Book Concierge wrote: "re page numbers for audio editions. The GR librarians guidance is that the "page number" for audios is the length of the book rounded to closest HOUR. This is why I shelve a different edition for audiobooks.
Nicole- I would love a stat that told me how many hours of audiobooks I listened to this year, lol. Maybe I need to find a way to add that onto my personal spreadsheet.

Yes, I'm the same. It's only recently that I've admitted to anyone that I love romantic suspense. It's easy to read and you don't have to think about it. I still do appreciate good writing and many of them are. The characters can be rather unrealistic but if you can suspend disbelief to read Tolkein then why not these too? The only ones I really dislike are where the woman makes genuinely stupid decisions under any circumstances!
My books this year so far are 337 and the vast majority are the same light, possibly trashy, romances which is actually why I joined this group. My horizons are definitely expanding but I still revert to the same type of book most evenings!
I don't think the page numbers can be right because it's got my shortest at 8 pages and the longest at 746 and neither of those can be correct. Still I don't really care about that. This is the first year I realised you can add re-reads to the list but I might go back to first-time reads only as that's a much more interesting total.
I'm posting this a bit early, since I'm still in the middle of my 30th and final book of 2018. These are the projected stats: I read 11,245 pages across 30 books (although many were audiobooks)
Average length 374 pages
Shortest book Binti at 96 pages (it's a novella and one of my favorite reads of the year!!!)
Longest book Dragonfly in Amber at 743 pages
Most popular The Name of the Wind with 555,795 ratings (what a sweep!!!)
Least popular Soul Catchers with 82 ratings
My average rating 4.0
Highest rated on Goodreads The Name of the Wind with an average 4.55 rating

I loved The Name of the Wind and the second of the trilogy was great too-unfortunately, still waiting on the last installment!
Joanne wrote: "I loved The Name of the Wind and the second of the trilogy was great too-unfortunately, still waiting on the last installment!"Same here! Pat's too busy with his fundraising, appearances and his little boy, it seems! But his fundraising always makes a lot, and I like his Worldbuilders charity. And I waited over two hours to get my books autographed last time he was in LA.

FYI - skip the Military K-9 series published this year --- the premises was unbelievable from the first. I think I gave just about all in the 6 book series 1 star. I also don't usually write actual reviews of these.
I'm a pretty diverse reader, and have always sprinkled cozy mystery and contemporary or regency romance series amongst more hefty reading. However, I'd really sunk into a rut, was not reading the piles of diverse books I'd buy, and only came out of it when a couple of friends suggested doing Pop Sugar challenge in 2016. From there I started keeping track of all reading on GR. Now I'm here. It's all good!

Some of us are also waiting for GRRM to publish The Winds of Winter - and he still has one more to go after that! Patience is a virtue...and the wait is usually worth it.
In the meantime, have any of you read either of Dorothy Dunnett's series - either The Lymond Chronicles or Nicolo Rising? Historical fiction rather than fantasy but fantastical for all that. And they are complete.
I reread the Lymond Chronicles a couple of years back - all time favourites. Haven’t tackled Niccolo yet - I made a start once but wasn’t in the mood (and he wasn’t Lymond!) but must try again.
I was thinking it is time to reread Lymond. Only read about half of Niccolo, but as you say, he's not Lymond! Would never read them in close proximity.

This sort of book is ideal to read between weightier tomes!

And I can really suspend disbelief!
Love me a good trained K-9 series too and there are several really good ones like the most recent by Katie Ruggles.
Is there a way to access this. It is no longer on my home page and just curious to see how it changed post finishing some books over the weekend.

Okay, I couldn't stop thinking about my audiobook stats so, like any good scientist, I made a little spreadsheet and did a little data analysis! lolBooks listened to: 59 (out of 91, but I will add to this by the end of the year)

KateNZ wrote: "And that was despite all the moving, Anita! I am in awe!"You are very sweet. It's really nothing compared to what other readers do, but I still felt happy!

Hmmm I also read The Fiery Cross this year .. but I always shelve the hardcover first edition (regardless of which edition I actually read) ... so I get on 979 pages for this one (still my longest book)...."
I think Nicole's came in at the same page numbering as mine, so we must have shelved the same edition.
