Awesome story!

Soul Catchers by Carrie Pulkinen has just about everything in it! Great fantasy, science fiction, touch of romance, adventure, action, suspense, genetics engineered werewolves, shamans, and corporate greed. Great characters and fast paced, never dull, good plot, nice twists, and a clever take on Red Riding Hood and the Wolf.

In Wren's world magic is forbidden and she has to hide her powers to stay alive. If the government would discover what she can do, they'd kill her or lock her up in a facility where she has to face a fate worse than death. Wren's mother is a healer who uses her powers in secret and she always makes sure Wren is protected against illnesses and wolves. However, on the one day Wren forgets her talismans, a wolf attacks and tries to kill her mother. Wren doesn't hesitate and uses her abilities to ...more

Romance for teens

The writing would be fine applied to a more substantial story. The plot and characters are a little thin, mainly because of the simplistic back story. I'm sure that I'll discover after the fact that this is a YA novel and not just flimsy writing.

The background explains nothing about food production, mining, power generation and transportation in a country whose population is penned up in a few cities. It doesn't explain the governmental power, political power or the role of the

When her mom is attacked by a wolf, Wren has no choice but to use her magic to try to save her. She manages to kill the wolf, but doesn't make it in time to save her mom. When Wren is thrown into a cell, she realizes that something far worse has happened. She learns that if you kill the wolf, you become the wolf.

With help, Wren escapes her prison and is discovered by Liam. Liam is a Soul Catcher and has the ability to see souls, including the wolf one that resides in Wren. The wolf gets control

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Soul Catchers by Carrie Pulkinen is the start to what promises to be a very addictive series. I loved this read because it was a different take on the wolf shifter process that combined a little fairytale (red riding hood), native American folklore and a lot of creative world building. Wren is our heartbreakingly unsuspecting heroine and Liam is our "can do" hero. Together they make an awesome team that has to learn how to trust each other. There is a little Hunger ...more

Recommends it for: fans of the Shifter Chronicles by Melle Amade
Wren has spent her whole life hiding her magical abilities from those who would turn her in to the government for execution. But when her mom is attacked by a shifter wolf, she uses her power and shoots the creature.

Problem is, those who kill the wolf become the wolf.

Liam is dead as far as anyone knows, but up on the mountain he does his best to use his powers to help those in his community -- especially the wolf. But the night he tries to talk to the wolf is a blood moon, and the power flowing

Red Riding Hood lives in this dystopian retelling of the old fairy tale. In this version, if you kill the wolf, then you “catch” it’s soul and you become the wolf.

Wren’s powers, if found out, could get her killed. Her mother keeps her safe with Old Magic tailismans. She’s a kid, one day she forgot them and when a wolf attacks her mother, Wren fights back the only way she knows how. Now what happens next morphs this tragic fairy tale into a romance as Liam, the witness to the attack now feels

I received a free copy of this as a Kindle Scout book and voluntarily chose to review it.
This was a very interesting concept for a werewolf shifter genre. I loved the “Little Red Riding Hood” references. It felt like I was reading a dystopian, shifter fairy tale. It grabbed my attention and kept it all the way through. This story was packed with action, betrayal, love, anger, empathy, and guilt. I found myself thinking about the story and trying to decide what would happen even when I was not

This was a fun YA read that I originally found as a Kindle Scout campaign. For supporting the novel, I was given a free ARC of the story. You might call it a dystopian retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. I am very impressed with Pulkinen's swift storytelling. It's even more interesting that the main protagonist, Wren, is Apache -- though I can't speak for how accurate the representation is, it is nice to have a woman of color featured in this coming-of-age tale. I felt both Wren and Liam were ...more

Good read

Told from Liam's and Wrens POV. Both have the sense and have had to go into hiding. Wren gained a wolf spirit along the way when she was trying to save her mum. Those with the sense are either locked up or killed. Liam and Wren fall in love and it seems they are soul mates. The characters and world building are well developed. The book doesn't end on a cliffhanger however the story hasn't come to an end. Will look forward to read the next book in this series. Highly recommended.

Okay, this is the book that beat Evil Angela in the Scout competition. Grumpy? Sure, for a day. Jelly? Absolutely. I had to read it, and I am so glad I did. Wonderfully written, Pulkinen has taken a worn out trope supply, rearranged it, and created something unique, fresh, and loveable. Place everything in a dystopian setting, and, is that distropic? However labelled, Pulkinen is a fantastic storyteller with awesome characters!
This is a unique book by a contemporary artist on the rise.
InD'tale Magazine

An interesting book combining YA Dystopian and Paranormal Romance tropes, “Soul Catchers” is the first book in its series and begins and ends with a bang.

Read full review in the 2018 July Aug issue of InD'tale Magazine.

Wolf with a twist

Great story with an interesting twist. Double check your description though. You are missing the spacing between several words. I would hate for people to skip your story due to errors there.

At first I dragged my feet about reading this book, but then I couldn't stop reading it. The characters aren't too whiny and their growth is quite good. I enjoyed the worldbuilding and overall plot.

Carrie Pulkinen is a paranormal romance author who has always been fascinated with things that go bump in the night. Of course, when you grow up next door to a cemetery, the dead (and the undead) are hard to ignore. Pair that with her passion for writing and her love of a good happily-ever-after, and becoming a paranormal romance author seems like the only logical career choice.
